This is a question that has arisen several times over the centuries, but in particular, since the 1960’s when one scientist theorized that we were merely unwittingly participating in a hologram without realizing it. Where have the suspicions originated from?
The suspicion that we might be living in a simulation began to gain traction after Nick Bostrom, an Oxford philosopher, proposed the simulation hypothesis in his 2003 paper "Are you living in a computer simulation?". This hypothesis suggests that our perceived reality is a sophisticated computer simulation, possibly created by a technologically advanced civilization. Prior to Bostrom, ideas about a fundamentally computational universe had been explored by Konrad Zuse in 1969 and Hans Moravec in the 1980s, though Bostrom's work brought the simulation hypothesis to a wider audience and sparked significant intellectual debate.

I will now unveil my own theory. With two observations. 1) Would be UAP’s and their unattainable technological advantages. Our best jet interceptors can’t seem to touch them, they have been witnessed to simply disappear, and they travel well beyond Mach speeds without even creating a sonic boom. It’s as though they enter our dimension and exit our realm with impunity. To be sure UFO’s or UAP’s seem to violate all physical laws that we trust as the foundation of our physics. Wouldn’t this be the case if an outside influence merely entered the simulation to alter or interfere in our reality with seeming magical or mysterious powers? Then exiting from our realm just as mysteriously?
2) Einstein stated that Quantum physics were indeterministic, in other words incomplete. One might recall that Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr had endless debates over the Theory of Relativity and Quantum Physics. Bohr was an advocate while Einstein’s idea of an orderly universe was violated by Quantum Theory. Once again we see a paradox in the explanation of physics that doesn’t seem to jive with our conception of the universe as we see it with our laws of science. Einstein described Quantum Theory as “Spooky action at a distance”. This illustrates Einstein’s problem with a theory that allows for electron behavior to replicate itself from light years across the universe in the very same manner simultaneously. To us humans this would seem absolutely impossible.
That is, unless some inexplicable outside force that operated under separate laws of physics and intervened in our reality from outside of it, such as another dimension or an uncannily technically superior civilization that was able to add incredibly complex detail in being the architect of this artificial reality they created. Once again, seeming to be a mysterious intervention into our universe that we could not account for.
Another explanation to this omnipotent existence of an external force could be God. The entity who created all the rules for the universe or the reality we exist within. Why would this be a plausible theory? Because in order that a simulation existed the computing power required would be as infinite as the perceived universe itself! This would be beyond any conceivable physics or programming capability that we could understand, but for that of an infinitely higher power of intellect than we could ever possess. So, with the laws of our universe and the limitations applied based upon our known physics the creator of the simulation would be omnipotent in comparison to us, and isn’t this how we define God?
