The human services workers concentrate highly on helping indigent individuals, communities, and groups. Thus, they work towards providing their clients with an access to fundamental products or services, such as medical care and food. The main objective of these specialists is to ensure that people get an opportunity to live a complete and independent life. Apparently, due to the interdisciplinary nature of this field, there is no specific path that one needs to follow to become a professional (from dissertation results section of Neukrug, 2017). However, regardless of the human service aspect that a person chooses, there are essential traits that help become effective professionals. For this reason, human services professional is classified by many as a calling rather than just a job (Woodside, & McClam, 2014). Therefore, the characteristics that one needs to develop in order to become an effective human service professional include courage, patience, empathy, and flexibility.

No matter the area of human service profession, the responsibilities assigned to a person may not be obvious. Moreover, their work with clients may sometimes be multifaceted and disturbing. Hence, it is crucial for an individual to be able to adapt to any changes, which makes flexibility an important prerequisite for every human service professional (Baldwin & Gould, 2016). Since such people are trying to overcome different bureaucratic and social organizations, it is important for them to comprehend that any change cannot happen immediately, hence emphasizing the need for patience (Neukrug, 2017). The work of human service professionals may sometimes happen in stressful environments, and the clients may be experiencing challenging situations as well. Therefore, the human service professional ought to be fearless, hence making courage an important element of this profession. Empathy is also crucial since such specialists need to comprehend and establish a connection with their clients and, in the process, help offer the best service to them.

As an aspiring human service professional, I believe that I am flexible since I am able to switch and adapt to the situation depending on the current circumstances. I have also cultivated the culture of being patient since my grandmother told me that good things might take time to happen, so I just have to wait for the right moment. The attributes I need to develop are courage and empathy. Sometimes, I tend to be daunted by repeated occurrence of adverse situations, which makes it hard for me to understand and get along with everyone, especially if they look scary.

In order to improve my empathy skills, I should always be with people when they need me. Empathy is a product of interacting with others. Besides, developing curiosity about strangers and other new trends may also be crucial in enhancing life satisfaction, especially when I show empathy. In this case, trying to comprehend what makes other individuals scary may also help me improve my courage. As a result, this might assist me in expanding my empathy circle. Facing fear may help me improve my courage. I believe that if I face my fears, then I will be able to identify their causes, which will be crucial for eliminating them or establishing ways that I can use to deal with them.

In conclusion, a human service professional is a person who wants to succeed while assisting others. In this case, these people need an array of skills and knowledge that may help them comprehend other individuals both within groups and as sole persons. Thus, considering the challenges that this field entails, one need to be courageous, develop empathy, be patient, and be flexible at all times to deal with all issues and ensure that their clients perform admirably well.
