Generally known as the "Business Plot," there was a plan set into motion by Wall Street heavyweights in the early 1930's that was aimed at the very usurpation of the American presidency, in order to install a Fascist system of government to increase their profits. The one man that the plan hinged upon was USMC Major General Smedley Butler. Butler was the most decorated man in the USMC at the time of his death, and still remains only one of 19 men to twice receive the Medal of Honor, one of three to be awarded both the Marine Corps Brevet Medal and the Medal of Honor, and the only marine to be awarded the Brevet Medal and two Medals of Honor, all for separate actions.[1]

After leaving the Mrine Corps, Butler was freer to exercise his outspoken nature, and began a career as a public speaker. A speech that he gave on August 21, 1931 to an American Legion convention in New Britain, Connecticut was apparently the beginnings of what would become the book he published in 1935, "War is a Racket."[2]

"I spent 33 years...being a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer for capitalism....

"I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1916. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City [Bank] boys to collect revenue in. I helped in the rape of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street....

"In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested....I had...a swell racket. I was rewarded with honors, medals, promotions....I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate a racket in three cities. The Marines operated on three continents..."[3]

In 1932, Butler gave a speech at what could be considered to be a forerunner to the Occupy Movement, where approximately 20,000 disgruntled veterans had amassed at The White House, and proclaimed they were going to stay, until they were satisfied with negotiations concerning bonuses that they were promised. Butler said of the determination and resolve of the assembled veterans, that it was "The greatest demonstration of Americanism that we have ever had, pure Americanism, willing to take this beating as you've taken it, stand right steady to keep every law..."

And beatings they took, as the very next day, the veterans were driven out by the Army, led by MacArthur, many died, were beaten and hospitalized, gas and tanks were used, and several wives and children of the veterans who were in attendance were injured and affected by the chemical warfare.

Many of the veterans knew Butler from his assignment at a processing facility, that many of the veterans had passed through, and he had uninanimous support from the group. This put him at the forefront of potential candidates for the coup, as he was known to have wide support among all veterans as a populist figure. You could say that he was the R. Lee Ermy of his day, minus the film career. You might not like him, but you've got to respect him.

Apparently, his appeal and 'celebrity status' so impressed those who wanted to buy the presidency, or take it by force, if necessary, that they had forgotten his speeches about the injustice and subversion of our country and military being used for building profits for corporations.

He was approached by Gerald MacGuire, a veteran himself, and former commander of the Connecticut American Legion, who was currently working as a bonds salesman on Wall Street for another conspirator, Robert Clark, who whose grandfather was partner and head of the Singer sewing monolith, was also one of the first to start the trend toward credit in the US, by implementing installment plans to sell more units.[4]

A meeting was arranged between Butler and Clark(who had served under Butler in the Boxer Rebellion, and was known begrudgingly by him as the 'milliionaire lieutenant', because of his inheritance fro his grandfather), as Butler demanded more details on those behind the plot, while feigning an interest in their undertakings.

Once he had gathered what he felt was enough information, he went public and exposed the plot. The general testified before the McCormack-Dickstein Committee, and the conspirators he named included:


Irenee Du Pont - Right-wing chemical industrialist and founder of the American Liberty League, the organization assigned to execute the plot.

Grayson Murphy - Director of Goodyear, Bethlehem Steel and a group of J.P. Morgan banks.

William Doyle - Former state commander of the American Legion and a central plotter of the coup.

John Davis - Former Democratic presidential candidate and a senior attorney for J.P. Morgan.

Al Smith - Roosevelt's bitter political foe from New York. Smith was a former governor of New York and a codirector of the American Liberty League.

John J. Raskob - A high-ranking Du Pont officer and a former chairman of the Democratic Party. In later decades, Raskob would become a "Knight of Malta," a Roman Catholic Religious Order with a high percentage of CIA spies, including CIA Directors William Casey, William Colby and John McCone.

Robert Clark - One of Wall Street's richest bankers and stockbrokers.

Gerald MacGuire - Bond salesman for Clark, and a former commander of the Connecticut American Legion. MacGuire was the key recruiter to General Butler.[5]

The Committee and the media, of course, suppressed and attempted to discredit the story, and most particularly, protect the elites involved from prosecution and/or persecution, so most Americans are still unaware of this plot, and the man to which we all owe a great debt of gratitude, to this day.

I think that FDR was already controlled by international bankers and multinational corporations, as he said himself that "Presidents are not elected, they're selected," but I feel that, had this plot succeeded, this country would have taken a much deeper plunge into dictatorship and coporate control in quicker time, had this plot succeeded...
