Mahafarid Amir Khosravi, the billionaire Iranian businessman convicted of orchestrating a $2.6bn (£1.5bn) banking scheme, has reportedly been hanged in Tehran's Evin prison.
Khosravi was sentenced to death after being convicted of "corruption...through bribery and money laundering," a justice department statement aired by Iranian media said. Khosravi's lawyer, Gholam Ali Riahi, was quoted by news website khabaronline.ir as saying his client was put to death without prior notification. "I had not been informed about execution of my client," Riahi said. "All the assets of my client are at the disposal of the prosecutor's office." The scandal broke in 2011 when prosecutors said they discovered a private umbrella group, led by Amir Khosravi, and his brothers, unlawfully collecting billions of dollars.

Having never supported capital punishment, i am not particularly happy about this report, though i do cheer its positive approach and the way the state is dealing with those that steal from the people. We may have to be a little patient with our governments as they will need to find alternate funding for their nest eggs if they are ever to turn against the hands that feed them. Rather than the Death Penalty, I would prefer that the guilty relinquish all assets including those of their families and that they be forced to beg for their living outside the very offices where their crimes took place. Well signposted, there should be no confusion for any, that pass them by,that these despicable wretches are beyond pity or salvation. All this of course, will come after incarceration appropriate to their crimes.
