New and highly effective treatments against the Ebola virus could be just a couple of months away according to researchers at the Galveston National Laboratory in Texas.

Dr. Thomas Geisbert is leading the Ebola work and says both vaccines and therapies are in an advanced stage of development and testing.

Among the most critical work underway at GNL is an effort to bundle multiple anti-Ebola countermeasures into a single powerful treatment.

Geisbert says they are saving test primates with the virus and protection for humans is within reach.

"Two of those vaccine candidates are moving forward for phase one trials right now.

That's more progress than I've seen in 25 years of Ebola research. It's exciting " said Geisbert.

The report was welcomed by U.S. Senator John Cornyn who toured the highly secure facility and pledged his continued support.

"My own view is that facilities like this the kind of cutting edge research they are doing should be a priority for our country", said Cornyn.
