A police officer involved in the Sydney drug raid which ended in the death of Constable William Crews is "unsure" whether he fired the fatal shot, according to reports.

Constable Crews was among eight officers from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad who were carrying out the raid at the Bankstown home on Wednesday night.

A man inside the home who was suspected of dealing drugs allegedly opened fire when the officers burst in, and five shots were exchanged.

Police have not ruled out that a young officer at the scene may have accidentally killed Constable Crews in the firefight.

"The young man can't be sure one way or the other if he may have shot his mate," Police Deputy Commissioner Nick Kaldas told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Constable Crews was reportedly shot twice in the body, with one of the shots travelling up and hitting him in the head.

Tests are being carried out to see if he was the victim of friendly fire.

Eight people were taken into police custody over the incident, and two men were charged, although no drugs were found at the property.

seven soldiers face charges relating to helping to cover up the killings and to the bashing of a soldier who had blown the whistle on the rogue unit by reporting other abuses, which included members regularly smoking hashish stolen from civilians.

One of the world's largest organised crime syndicates has infiltrated Australia, a report says.

Fairfax newspapers say the Mexican Sinaloa cartel, which is suspected of importing more than half the cocaine used on the east coast of Australia in the past two years at a rate of about 500 kilograms a month, was behind a 240-kilogram cocaine shipment intercepted in Sydney in June.

The seizure netted drugs an estimated value of $83 million in what was Australia's fifth-largest bust.

International law enforcement agencies including the US Drug Enforcement Agency belive Sinaloa has set up a well resourced business in Australia, with operatives based in Sydney, the newspapers said.

Four men were charged in connection to the bust, although none are considered senior syndicate figures, it said.

Details of the death remain unclear and the matter is under investigation by Northern Territory police.

They will prepare a report for the coroner.
