Nevada prison to charge inmates for food and medical care

The Elko County Commission approved Sheriff Jim Pitts’ proposal to charge inmates at the Elko County jail $6 a day for meals, $10 for each doctor visit and $5 for initial booking into the jail.  This is especially alarming considering that the vast majority of people behind bars are only “guilty” of nonviolent crimes, and there are also many who are wrongfully imprisoned.

Tod Story, executive director of the ACLU Nevada, told the The Associated Press that “I was aghast that anyone was even thinking of doing this”. “It is unconstitutional — cruel and unusual punishment.”

$6 * 356 = $2190 anually

That is added punishment. Reply by demanding rights to sell products to pay for all expences (they have that opportunities in Bolivia)

Ignoring the fact that most prisoners have done nothing wrong, expenses for housing and feeding prisoners are supposed to be paid for by taxes. How is a released prisoner, one without a job or a place to stay, supposed to pay this money?

What happens if a released prisoner can't afford to pay these fees? They are arrested and put back into jail where they are billed even more for their incarceration. This is obviously a ploy to make debt prisoners.

This law/regulation/policy also shows how unjust the American form of government is as released prisoners are NOT allowed to vote and are very unlikely to be elected. Therefore, anyone who has been convicted of a "crime" is NOT represented by the government.

This is true in most cases even if you have never been to prison. In most cases you only have to be a felon to have your rights removed. This includes the right to leave the country. Actually this is only true for poor people. People with family money or other resources can afford to pay to get their rights back.

Again money, it is always the money.

If the government turns it back to its people then I feel the people should turn it's back on the government. I don't mean literally turn your back either, I don't turn my back on people I don't trust.
