Veterans attack 'boneheaded' Distinguished Warfare Medal medal for deskbound drone pilots

The U.S. Military Invented a Medal for Drone "Pilots"?!?

Outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced this week a new medal for desk-bound warriors who control killer robots responsible for the deaths of thousands in South Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.

The Distinguished Warfare Medal will recognize drone pilots for their “extraordinary achievements that directly impact on combat operations, but do not involve acts of valor or physical risks that combat entails.”

In other words, what Glenn Greenwald  once described as “sitting safely ensconced in a bunker on U.S. soil and launching bombs with a video joystick at human beings thousands of miles away” is now considered an “extraordinary achievement.”

The drone medal will rank above the Bronze Medal and Purple Heart, meaning computer screen heroes will receive awards more prestigious than troops who get shot in battle. Even members of the military community, including Veterans of Foreign Wars, are blasting the absurdity of the medal’s rank.

“It’s a boneheaded decision,” VFW spokesman Joe Davis told Fox News. “This is going to affect morale and it’s sending troops in the field a horrible message.”

Even more horrible is the message sent to citizens of countries facing regular drone attacks, including Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. A report from Stanford and NYU  released in September estimates that from June 2004 through September 2012, drone strikes killed 2,562 – 3,325 people in Pakistan, including 474 – 881 civilians, 176 of whom were children. The report also says that “high-level” targets account for about 2 percent of drone casualties.

Rather than owning up to the unconscionable devastation of Obama’s signature weapon, U.S. lawmakers have downplayed civilian casualties from drone strikes. Senator Diane Feinstein disgracefully claims that  annual deaths have been in the “single digits.”

Apparently, it’s not enough for the U.S. government to willfully ignore the extent of its carnage. Now, it’s awarding medals to the literal armchair warriors who carry it out.

The Stanford/NYU report has the testimony of a Pakistani resident living in a heavy-drone strike region:

"Before this we were all very happy. But after these drones attacks a lot of people are victims and have lost members of their family.”

Maybe it's time for the U.S. military to rethink what constitutes bravery.

Veterans attack 'boneheaded' medal for drone pilots

Veterans have attacked a "boneheaded" new military medal for US drone pilots, arguing that it would unfairly outrank honours earned by soldiers serving on the front line.

The new Distinguished Warfare Medal, dubbed the "Geek's Cross" by detractors, ranks above the Purple Heart, which is awarded to those wounded in combat.

The award recognises "extraordinary achievement" by troops "who may not even be on the same continent as the action" and is intended for practitioners of cyber warfare or pilots of unmanned vehicles.

Joe Davis, a spokesman for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), America's largest combat veterans group, said it was a "boneheaded decision".

"Being on the front lines has to count for something because you're not just going home after work," Mr Davis told The Daily Telegraph. "You have to think about this from the perspective of the guy in the fox hole: they're questioning the leadership of the Pentagon".

Mr Davis said that the VFW had heard from active duty personnel and warned that the row over the medal could quickly turn into a "morale issue".

Comments on the VFW's Facebook page speculated that that the Pentagon could soon be handing out medals for those wounded in video games.

A Pentagon spokesman said: "Those furthest from the fight/risk are not eligible for a higher award than those engaging the enemy and risking their lives each day."

America's highest military honours - including the Medal of Honour for acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty - remain open only to those serving on the front lines.

New medal for drone pilots outranks Bronze Star

The Pentagon is creating a new high-level military medal that will recognize drone pilots and, in a controversial twist, giving it added clout by placing it above some traditional combat valor medals in the military’s “order of precedence.”

The Distinguished Warfare Medal will be awarded to pilots of unmanned aircraft, offensive cyber war experts or others who are directly involved in combat operations but who are not physically in theater and facing the physical risks that warfare historically entails.

The new medal will rank just below the Distinguished Flying Cross. It will have precedence over — and be worn on a uniform above — the Bronze Star with Valor device, a medal awarded to troops for specific heroic acts performed under fire in combat.

The new medal is a brass pendant, nearly two inches tall, with a laurel wreath that circles a globe. An eagle is in the center. The ribbon has blue, red and white stripes.

“This award recognizes the reality of the kind of technological warfare we are engaged in the 21st century,” Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told reporters in Washington on Wednesday.

The new medal will be awarded for specific acts, such as the successful targeting of a particular individual at a critical time.

“Our military reserves its highest decorations obviously for those who display gallantry and valor in actions when their lives are on the line and we will continue to do so,” Panetta said.

“But we should also have the ability to honor the extraordinary actions that make a true difference in combat operations,” Panetta said. “The contribution they make does contribute to the success of combat operations, particularly when they remove the enemy from the field of battle, even if those actions are physically removed from the fight.”

The service secretaries will make the final determination for awarding the Distinguished Warfare Medal.

The order of precedence came as a surprise to Doug Sterner, a military medals expert and the curator of the Military Times Hall of Valor, the largest database of military medal recipients.

“It’s got me puzzled,” Sterner said in an interview Wednesday. “I understand the need to recognize the guys at the console who are doing some pretty important things. But to see it ranking above the Bronze Star [with] V?”
