We've went too with smaller Mylar bags instead of a 5 gallon bag. This to me makes sense. We open what we need and the rest stays sealed until we need it and in a 5 gallon bucket.
I've bought a lot of books on preserving and killing and dressing out animals. I've dressed animals before but it's been so long I forget on some of them. One of the better books is the Air Force Survival Manual on a broader scale. Books on traps and snares isn't a bad idea either. If you haven't grown your own, light reading on how, though most over dramatize it. Plus growing is region and sometimes acre specific. That part is best to observe and ask around.
I wasted a lot of money on short term food i do not normally eat. I went with long term food stored in mylar and last for 25 yrs.. solutions for science has been pretty helpful to me. http://www.solutionsfromscience.com/?cat=22 WISE Co has been pretty good too. http://wisefoodstorage.com/ they have other interesting things too, like stove in a can one of my favorites.
Lynn, We don't stock heavy on expiration date foods, maybe like a years worth at tops (when combined with other things). Go with stuff that would sustain like rice, but get the Enriched, it lasts longer. As our stuff with expiration dates draw even close we give it away, alwasy somebody hungry out there. If we miss any we put in in our garden for a soil builder. Most of our stuff though we grow and can ourselves. Water we don't worry about. We have a well and I have a hand pump just in case, plus 2 springs and a cistern nearby. I also built a small Colloidal Silver maker and keep some .9999 Silver handy.
So basically stock big one the long term storage stuff. Light on dated stuff. Make friends sharing the excess. Know where all possible water source are. Have back up energy for cold stuff. Full freezers cost less to operate and stay colder longer. The world is changing but I don't see it ending no time soon, so enjoy what you have while you have it. It'll be over before you know it. :)
