Food Storage 101

Ask yourself this question- In an emegency do you want to stand in a soup line?

Why Have Food Storage:
This has been the subject of my studies for about 20 or more years now, and just like yesterday it still fascinates me to no end.

I have a lovely family of 4 children all grown now, but when they were young I started out by trying to find ways to feed and care for them on a strict budget, because I had a frugal husband at the time.

However in time, what I learned is probably the most important information a person could have in a time of crisis. With my knowledge and the help of some very wise individuals who helped me understand the importance of storing, and completing a food storage plan, I got into storing a years supply of food for my family for security.

Throughout my years of reading and studying about different storeable foods I can help you plan the best food storage program for the best prices.

I have read many books on the subject, attended many a lectures all pertaining to food storage. I have come to learn exactly what's needed to know in order to begin. I have taught many classes on the subject and organized Family Preparedness fairs that were a huge success!

What I have found in most cases is that most people really do understand the importance of storing food, but they just don't know where to begin and/or are overwhelmed with the idea of where to start . There are some very hard and fast rules in storing foods, some of this information will save you a lot of time and money if followed correctly.

I will be breaking this down as simply as I can, teaching you ways to store food for you and your loved ones, as cost effective as possible.

I must stress to anyone interested in embarking on such a task to be open minded about this and not think it's just for them crazy Mormons, Mountain people or Militia's. Storing food is not paranoid, it's just smart!

The best way to think about it is like you do with insurance.

Do you have insurance?
So you pay your insurance, be it Home, Auto, or Health, you pay, yearly/weekly/bi weekly right? It's a high priority for the "JUST IN CASE scenario." But at the end of the year after paying you didn't die, get injured or have auto accident, but in the case something did happen to you, it was there for you right and I'm sure you were so glad you were covered weren't you?

Well food storage should be thought of in that same manner. It will be there for you when you need it and if you don't need it, unlike your insurance policy you can eat it all up and replace it when needed and if you do need it, then you and your loved one's don't starve to death in an emergency situation or disaster!

Nothing lost in my opinion, as you would have with a paid insurance policy. Food storage is security just like that insurance policy, it gives you peace of mind if the "JUST IN CASE!"

Most of us have been very fortunate with abundance, most of us have not had to look into our children's eyes and tell them "sorry, but there just isn't any food to eat!" Sorry would hardly be appropriate, I'm sure you would ever want to utter those words.

In the wake of 911 and the current economic crisis our wealthy nation is all of the sudden going through, we should use history to teach and educate us on reality. Reality is we do not know for certain that we will always have food, we will always have an abundance and we can always feed our family. People all over are losing job's and the future is uncertain to many of us, but it doesn't have to be now while we still have plenty.

During the great depression, food was money, food was a matter of life and death because there were no jobs, there was no money. Farmers can not grow their massive crops, infrastructure can come to a screeching halt in days and then what?

Storing food is economical sound and smart as a way to INSURE you and your families are taking care of no matter how dire the situation or current events are. And the most beautiful thing about it is, if you store foods you normally eat, and nothing does happens to upset your way of life, then you have lost nothing at all! Instead you probably saved yourself a ton of money in the long run, because in my 52 years of life, I have never seen any food prices go down, instead they have continually grown each and ever year.

In conclusion I can see nothing at fault in storing food it is simply the smartest and most sound investment you will ever make for you and your loved one's.

Thanks for the info MGM, I just remembered hearing that on AJ many times. Never bought from them, there are many seed companies that do the right thing cheaper, you are right about that.

MM, NEVER recycle cooking oil and consult an authority on cooking oils and temperatures. All oils produce carcinogens at certain temps and some oils work more safely then others at high heat. Investigate the use of cooking oils if you use them.

Keisha the very best 7.62x39 round -which is what an AK-47 Chambers is Wolf Brand. I challenged their test and they came up the winner! Their challenge is to take a few rounds and drop in a container of water and leave them for 7-10 days. Afterwards chamber them in your rifle and pull the trigger. Well I did, and the rounds discharged as normal as any dry round would. Stay with with Wolf Brand ammo. for your AK-47 and or SKS. Their pistol ammo is made the same way but some pistols are sensitive in their feed. Wolf does use steel casing so it's not re loadable, but it's also inexpensive. Don't worry about Corrosive ammo but if you choose to use Corrosive ammo keep a small bottle of ammonia with you and swab out your barrel after firing. AKs and SKS usually have a chrome lined barrel but its not good to leave corrosive salts from the primer in your weapon for very long. It's just good policy to keep your firearms in check regularly, and never discharge before you check your muzzle and action, a quick glance, regularly, is strongly encouraged.

I strongly encourage people to diversify in their preparations and have functional redundancy whenever possible and affordable.

Know your terrain/environment
Know yourself and learn as much as you can about the challenges and or your enemy.

Stay focused on the idea that your creating a lifestyle much to what you are already use to except it will be a little less convenient.

the government is very aware of the level of resistance they will face and if you do a google search on topics such as Northern Command aka North Com; militarization of State Police; containment centers, you'll see they have made some serious preparations. My hope for me is to be be prepared well enough to stay out of the way and always remain alive to fight another day only if I have to. How bad is going to get?

Bad enough and though many parts of the infrastructure will continue the criteria requirements by which people will be able to benefit from the system may be at the cost of eternal salvation. so how an individual is going to get through it all is also going to largely depend on the integrity of the relationship one has with their creator.

I have posted more ideas within the comments here so I hope you'll take a glance and they can help you. Personally, I've been through a lot over the past 12 years and have read a lot information and attended a number of rehearsels. I'm no expert but I know my weapons and limitations - I'm confident that I can take care of myself and help watch out for others if the need arises. Time permitting, I want to learn treatment of deep puncture wounds and poultices.

We have canned foods, but we repackage pasta, rice, beans, nuts and grains in glass. We're not hiking anywhere, we have a house and we're staying right here. Besides, we use some of the stored food from time to time and replace it to turn it over and keep it all relatively fresh.

Bisphenol vs Guillotine vs Firing Squad vs Shot in the head... six in one - a half dozen in the other

It really comes down to the individual plan. Glass is Heavy and Fragile but on the other hand probably 99.9 % biologically safer... on the other hand if you've been eating canned goods here and there throughout your life you're already infected with Bisphenol. If you're not going to mobilize, then shelf design is going to be important in order to protect the glass jars from earthquakes. This is why your first consideration should always be Location, Location, Location...

Where are you now?

Where do you want to be?

How are you going to get there?

Glass and rough terrian usually don't blend well.

Glass and can has to be washed or buried deep

Cans are also heavy

Store some things in small portions and don't forget comfort food also, in case you have to leave from where you plan to stay that is if you plan on making a stand at your current home. Small portions pack easier.

A good variety of but not too much junk foods to avoid Food Fatigue. Think of spices too; Sweet, Bitter, and Hot spices help avoid Food Fatigue.

Almost all cans (I think all of them) have a coating of Bisphenol A on the inside. Unfortunately, BPA can activate estrogen receptors that lead to the same effects as the body's own estrogens. Some hormone disrupting effects in studies on animals and human cancer cells have been shown to occur at levels as low as 2-5 parts per billion. Plastic, like Mylar, also leaches Bisphenol A. Glass is the only safe & effective long term storage medium for food.

Well said Gary! Ditto Ya'aKov! (Baruch Ha shem Yahshuah Ha Mashiach)

Gary- you've really got handle on it. You're one thousands who can articulate your understanding of the facts and principles... so if you ever need to just vent or express a view or revelation always feel free to contact me.

Keisha - if you use cans, use the ones that are coated and consider rotation. The way things are going I don't think rust is going to be an issue. Mylar bags with an oxygen absorber are best to store in. If you are in an area that is high humidity, store your cans in a 5 Gal bucket??? You could also use light coat of lubricant or moister deterrent such you would use on camping gear, on the outside of the cans. Most cans have a coating on the outside though.
