Solidarity Protests across the globe - Walk Like An Egyptian - Solidarity Protests Across The Globe

Solidarity Protests across the globe

Video is on the front page.  This might bring tears...

"We will not be silenced, whether you're a Christian or a Muslim, whether you're an atheist, you will demand your god damned rights, and we will have our rights, one way or the other! We will never be silenced!" (0:45)

Nikki, Italy was next. I gathered some useful links in an article (supported by a local) http://nynke.wordpress.com/2011/02/16/squares-are-hip

Yemen might just be next, Nynke - stay tuned.

I propose a bet. Who'll play broker for us? The prize is the title of "best anticipator", where "best" is "closest".

I say Yemen is next. Yemen has the second largest military force on the Arabian Peninsula after Saudi Arabia. But the latter has projected to have 40% more Oil Reserves than it really has, to get more (new) investors. That worked so now those interests are too well protected.

And about 40% of the Yemen's GDP accounts for defense spending ...

Yemen is my entry for a next bet.

What say you?

Nynke, you make excellent points, I enjoyed reading your entire article.  They are saying that 'the winds of change are sweeping the Middle East' and Tunisia and Egypt were fortunate in that the military refused to suppress the people.  But what will happen in Yemen, Libya, etc?  To get this far you have to have a military that's not been brain-washed against the people.

Thanks Nikki. I agree with the warning, for similar reasons. I wrote this in 2008: http://stonecircles.wordpress.com/2008/05/30/antlers/

  • Ignoring the potential for a coup d’état conducted either to pre-empt chaos or to seize control of a group when a leader collapses is a major mistake. A group which has ignored this potential and failed to prepare to resist a coup d’état if and when it comes, may find that it faces a new less humane leadership, potentially worse then in the old status quo, and one more difficult to resist.
  • When less humane leadership collapses, especially laissez-faire supporters may fail to institutionalize more fully humane  thinking and may flounder in integration and practice. The result may be to discredit “more fully humane”, to create a longing for the “good old days” under the “strong pyramidical leadership”, and to open the door for acceptance of a new “strong leader“.

And this isn't about "I told you so". If I can see these, then so can a lot of other people. Obviously. Most of the people that can see these "usual story plots" benefit from the current pyramids. In and off itself not a problem, but if combined with unbalanced self-interest ... Such co-dependency patterns are very, very hard to break.

Having said that, I prefer not to interpret "non-information" (not gathered by senses), and do not want to fall into the trap of self-fulfilling prophesies. What's actually happening? Anybody care to leak info? :)

And what about the fear that, after the fall of Mubarak, the new government will be hostile towards Israel? If the new government is genuinely the expression of a people that proudly enjoys its freedom, then there is nothing to fear: antisemitism can only grow in conditions of despair and oppression.

In Egypt's Tahrir Square, celebration grinds to a halt with Mubarak's speech

"By the time Mubarak, the old general, reached the point in which he insisted he had to soldier on to save the nation from chaos, the crowd erupted in angry shouts of “Illegitimate! Illegitimate!” that drowned out the rest of his speech."
