The Kuthiyottom ritual is performed every year during the Pongala festival at the Hindu Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. During the ritual, young boys must perform penances, ending with their sides being threaded with a small metal hook. Kerala’s Director General of Police and Prisons has called the practice cruel.
