(INTELLIHUB) — A toxic chemical that is found in cat feces has apparently made its way to the arctic where it has infected local whales.
The finding was announced Thursday and comes with a warning to local residents who eat whale meat. The cat parasite, known as Toxoplasma gondii, is infectious and can be spread between various animal species.
“It’s an unprecedented opportunity for pathogens to shift into new environments,” Michael Grigg, a molecular parasitologist with the U.S. National Institutes of Health, told reporters at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Chicago.
