I thought that the golliwog dolls many had as kids were based more on them being like minstrels/ entertainers like  clowns in a away. Prior to those times there were the popular nursery songs and books written by respected writers enjoyed by many which described them differently, perhaps even worst than gollies. Haven't seen any modern books published like them. I 'ld probably go for little black sambo if if If I had to choose one to read to kids, from the 1950s I think.

It is my understanding that Golliwogs are considered racist, as is the term considered a racial slur.  I'm just surprised that reading about baboons is being compared to reading about black families on BBC.  It seems like it would be offensive.

I think in our parents early years there may have been popular children's books on the subject.
