Ebola Pandemic: Before You Panic – Remember the Avian Flu, Swine Flu, and Anthrax

Ample evidence in the current Ebola pandemic shows that the fear generated by government and media is far out of proportion to the real risks and dangers of the Ebola virus. Many in power know that the more the public is in fear, the easier it is to manipulate emotions and direct public money into the coffers of Big Pharma and other elite groups who have much to profit from this fear mongering.
Yes, Ebola is a dangerous disease. According to the World Health Organization, the average fatality rate is around 50%. Yet the vast majority of these cases have been in African countries where health conditions and even health care is severely lacking in comparison with the industrialized world.
Thousands have died in the current pandemic in Africa, yet the number who have died in developed nations can be counted on one hand. Only a few have been infected outside Africa, yet every death and even infection in Europe or the US makes major headlines. Outside of Africa, people have a better chance of being killed by lightening than by Ebola.
Remember the worldwide fear and paranoia spread by the media and governments during the anthrax scare after 9/11, the avian flu crisis in 2005, and the swine flu pandemic in 2009? In each of these, government and media combined to massively spread fear of widespread deaths that never became a reality. So who benefited from all this fear mongering then, and who is benefiting now?
First, let's look at the 2001 anthrax scare. The total number of people eventually infected was around a couple dozen. Five people died. Yet this Washington Post article cites the FBI's "damage" estimate of over $1 billion. Hundreds of millions were spent just to clean up buildings thought to be at risk. Yet were they really, or was this a way of channeling millions to the corporations involved?
Bayer sold the US government one hundred million tablets of Cipro at nearly $100 million to combat the "huge" anthrax threat. Yet the vast majority of those pills were never taken and have now passed their expiration date. So who profited here? Billions of dollars of taxpayer money flowed into the coffers of the corporations involved in handling all of this. More details are available here.
What about the avian flu in 2005? The mortality rate from this virus was about 60%, similar to the current Ebola outbreak. Predictions were made that this virus could easily spread to anywhere from two million to one billion people. Media chimed in with government to spread fear far and wide. One BBC headline read "Bird flu 'could kill 150m people'," quoting one UN health official. Yet in the end, the total number of cases reported was well under 1,000.
Who benefited from all the fear mongering? The headline of a top UK newspaper read "Donald Rumsfeld makes $5m killing on bird flu drug." Rumsfeld was the chairman of the board of Gilead, the maker of Tamiflu, before becoming US Secretary of Defense. According to this CNN article, Former US Secretary of State George Schultz (another Gilead board member) also sold $7 million worth of his Gilead stock during the flu scare. How many others did likewise?
Note that the usefulness of Tamiflu was highly questioned in treating avian flu. So who really benefited here? And why does there seem to be a revolving door between government and Big Pharma?
Then there was the swine flu in 2009–2010. The H1N1 swine flu was certainly much more widespread, with CDC data giving an estimated number of cases varying from 40 to 90 million and between 9,000 and 18,000 deaths in the US alone. Yet was this flu much different from the normal yearly flu? The annual death rate in the US from the regular flu is estimated by the CDC at 36,000. Predictions of massive deaths around the world, like with the earlier avian flu, never materialized.

Comment by linda dagosta on October 26, 2014 at 4:33pm: this is clearly the errors of man playing with things they DO NOT UNDERSTAND.. should study and research them to know how they work but be more concerned about cautions taken while doing so... seems no one ever considers all the precautions necessary when dealing with the unknown.. there is NO sure way to contain anything.. while researching ,, there is always a chance for human error.. and this is the biggest threat to humankind there is ,, no other threat surpasses that of human error in judgement when dealing with and understanding the unknown..

WTH if they don't even know what catalysts spread it then how can they be certain they have something to contain it or cure it for that matter... WOW

Once again we have to ask who benefited from all the swine flu fear mongering. A Reuters article states, "The United States has spent more than $1.3 billion buying a strategic reserve of antivirals including Tamiflu, while the British government has spent almost $703 million (424 million pounds) on a stockpile of some 40 million Tamiflu doses." Yet the article quotes a lead researcher stating, "There is no credible way these drugs could prevent a pandemic," And remember that all these drugs have expiration dates of just a few years, so most of them are now expired.

During the swine flu scare, we were all asked to get the Pandemrix flu vaccine to prevent the swine flu. GlaxoKlineSmith openly bragged that sales of the vaccine would top over US$1.5 billion (UK£1 billion) in one three month period during the flu. Yet Time magazine reported that government officials in Germany snubbed the Pandemrix vaccine for another more effective vaccine, even as they promoted Pandemrix for their constituents. Hmmmmm....

Who really benefited from all the fear mongering surrounding these three scares? A leading UK newspaper reported in April of this year that a group of scientists estimated that governments had wasted nearly about $800 million stockpiling drugs for the avian and swine flu that weren't even cures. Those like Rumsfeld, Schultz, and many others who profit from Big Pharma made a killing on our wasted tax dollars.
