If that number is based on 'registered' firearms, then the actual number is much much higher than that. There was a time when registration was not required. There are also many gun owners that see registration as an infringement on their right to own a gun. There is actually no way of knowing how many civilian firearms are out there and that is a good thing. A well armed militia is what it will take should the need arise. Lets not forget that there are probably private factories in basements across America pumping out an arsenal of 3D printed firearms as we speak. So it is safe to say that the top line in the graph should be extended another couple of feet to be more accurate. If we give that up we lose our only edge.
