Thought that endorsing Romney was bad enough? In another turn of events that exposes the corporatist leanings of Rand Paul, Senator from Kentucky, he has voted NO on a GMO labeling amendment to the farm bill “to permit States to require that any food, beverage, or other edible product offered for sale have a label on indicating that the food, beverage, or other edible product contains a genetically engineered ingredient.” The following is taken from the United States Senate Website.

@Rogue Dave, you're probably right. But unfortunately a free market requires a free press.  If people were told the truth they wouldn't buy GMO, etc and the producers would be forced to sell non-GMO.

A big win in Canada this week for those with Celiac or gluten intolerance. Health Canada passed stricter labeling requirements for anything labeled 'Gluten Free' including anything containing oats or 'natural spices'. There are no shades of gray here, either something is gluten free or it isn't. Meanwhile the FDA will most likely continue to take bribes from food processors rather protect consumers. Kudos to Health Canada.

Conclusion, Rand Paul just voted AGAINST an Amendment that would require States to label all food, beverages, or other edible products offered for sale that contain GMO ingredients.

It would appear as if Rand Paul has sold out...

Giving this further thought (compared to my prior comment) - it could be that part of Rand's philosophy is to let the "market" decide.

While this does not help consumers, because they are less informed, a producer of non-GMO products that voluntarily adds its own description and labeling, who thereby garners consumer support, takes market share and economically leads other producers to adopt the same strategy to remain competitive in the market, could be part of the thinking.  This nonetheless requires consumers who are informed about their power in the marketplace, and sufficient numbers of them, to make a difference.

Sen Rand Paul clearly does not hold his father's values.

Almost all of them voted against it. There must be something wrong with the amendment. Also, almost all corn and soy are now genetically modified. Therefore, almost all processed foods in the grocery store would have to be labeled. There must have been major lobbyist opposition to this amendment. I just avoid anything with corn or soy in it.
