The year is 1957 four years after the armistice in Korea and five years after the 1952 UFO flap. The United States is undergoing an unprecedented period of prosperity and peace. Housing is soaring, wages are up, and jobs are steady. Yet, one mystery remains to stir the pot-the ubiquitous UFO. Unlike previous concentrations of flying disk sightings the year of 1957 features the appearance of the phenomenon all over the world compelling the air forces of several nations to scramble their jet fighter squadrons.
Wrong Message
While the general consensus of the Pentagon and CIA is that the UFO paradox is impenetrable but does not pose a threat. That intelligence estimate proves incorrect and a potentially destabilizing element. With scientists warning that a hostile act by USAF interceptors could start a war mankind would regret with a technologically superior civilization, internal directives have changed. Now it becomes a question of which super power can capture the precious secret of flying saucer propulsion. In all likelihood this will lead to aggressive air to air tactics. Little does the public know that attempted shoot downs have already transpired as early as 1950.
Real Actions
The Kouril Islands off the Pacific coast of the Soviet mainland are the scene of anti aircraft fire directed at fast moving aerial objects in the night sky. According to Donald Keyhoe, even though all artillery is in action and munitions are being rapidly expended no effect is observed upon the elusive UFO's. Apparently Mig-15 fighter jets don't arrive on the scene soon enough to pursue and silence descends over the shocked personnel of the anti-aircraft batteries in the aftermath of the vicious firefight.
Texas UFO
In that same year a legendary incident occurs in Levelland, Texas as UFO sightings permeate the normally uneventful South Texas woodlands. However on this fateful night low flying airborne disks will terrorize the local people! In one encounter a State Trooper cruiser is forced to slam on its brakes as the two officers exit the vehicle and cower behind their squad car while the unidentified object swoops down below tree top level and makes several passes at the State Police vehicle! Motorists report mechanical difficulty as their electrical systems fail and their engines lose electrical ignition. Others on foot by the roadsides reportedly dive to the ground in order to keep from being struck by the unknown flying crafts that are possess unconventional flight characteristics. It seems UFO's have now become aggressive.
More mysterious losses
Among these two disturbing incidents are rumors of several more attempts by the USAF to intercept flying saucers at several locations over domestic air space resulting in disappearances, crashes, and bizarre electronic effects upon military radar and instruments. The public is kept unaware as many sightings that do reach newspaper headlines in local towns are debunked by the now impotent incarnation of Project Blue Book and its star scientific consultant J. Allen Hynek who uses an assortment of ridiculous explanations ranging from the Planet Venus to marsh gas! As encounters intensify only the illusion of a truthful Air Force response is fabricated to placate those who ask what, who, and why.
UFO dogfight
Included in this malaise of incredible UFO reports in sheer volume is the account of Lieutenant Newhouse who intercepted an aerial light in Fargo. Here in his very capable F-51 Mustang aircraft he made a great effort to intercept an unknown object as he used every acrobatic maneuver he could to identify the UFO. Later after supposedly careful investigation the USAF declared that the UFO was a lighted balloon! Of course the pilot was angry over their verdict! He was not convinced nor were the traffic controllers on duty at the time! The pilot went through crucial attempts at intercepting an unknown visual and radar target.

The above mentioned sightings do not include police incidents, police chases, towns where military bases reside but did not join in the report as well as observations made by military personnel not officially recorded on base. Also, to be fair there were hundreds of civilian observations not included in this massive data dump of UFO reports due to the need for expert witness files. So the incredible influx of UFO reports cannot be limited to military files. Courtesy of thecid.com.

Thanks Central Scrutinizer I'll try to be a good wing man and keep the UFO's off your six!
I was on a radio show with Robert Emmenegger who had directed the most successful documentary on UFO's in prime time history due to my column in the Plano Star Courier entitled Unexplained Mysteries which for the most part I dedicated to UFO's. An old man with a German accent gave us a call and made reference to the book "Brighter than a thousand suns" and talked about Nazi flying disks that were weaponized, but according to US records these were on the drawing board but never flew with the exception of the Horton Brothers Flying wings just as Jack Northrop was designing for the US. That was in 1995 and during my 2nd marriage while supporting my 4 kids and 2 step children. Prior to my 3rd failure in the bliss of marital mental abuse. Diana you are very astute and Raz Putin good observation.
I can't help but believe there is a connection to the "foo fighters" that were spotted by pilots at the end of WW2 and "Operation Paperclip" which allowed Nazi scientists to bring the technology to the US.
These are only military bases while civilian locations were much more numerous!
