A “Doomsday” device or weapon is designed to either obliterate an enemy or in the event of an imminent loss of the war to be used as a revenge weapon. It usually will be an indefensible form of weaponry maximizing casualties as it operates. Of course, mankind has a genius streak when it comes to destruction. Within years of the Wright Brothers invention of the airplane it was already a major offensive weapon by World War I. It was during WWI that the first indefensible weapon was developed. Marconi, the Italian pioneer of the radio, created a deadly weapon that was extremely effective but it caused death for both sides.
Using sound waves
An audio transmitter that produced low frequency bass waves that could disrupt the rhythm of the human heart was thought to be the most effective anti-personnel device on the battle field until it was actually tested. Soldiers would have suffered heart attacks by the thousands. They found that Marconi’s device transmitted its deadly bass wave length sound in a 360 degree radius thus killed British as well as German soldiers and they could find no way to focus it in one direction. Had they been able to no doubt losses on the battlefield would have been even more horrific forcing the enemy to maintain an effective distance from the location of the Marconi transmitter.
Mankind’s nightmare
We all know that the ultimate deadly weapon and thus “Doomsday” weapon would be thermo-nuclear devices such as missile delivered, aircraft carried bombs, and sub-orbital launched nuclear weapons. An exchange between the super powers of their nuclear arsenal would obviously mean the end of life as we know it on earth, but there have been variations of the bomb that illustrate the even greedier plans of weapons planners in the Soviet Union and the US.
The ultra-deadly Nuke
At one point, and it’s not clear if the program was completely abandoned or not, the Cobalt bomb was being researched. Intentions were to make it capable of taking out an entire continent. Few people were aware of the program but as the “Cold War” continued designs for the destruction of an entire society were in place for America as well as Russia. As of today, there appears to be no known continuing project still in operation. When Ronald Reagan sought to reduce nuclear arsenals between Russia and the US, Premier Gorbachev agreed and history would be made as the Berlin Wall would end up coming down in Germany. This might have curtailed the deadly program.
Tsar Bomba
At the same time Russia, during the nuclear arms race developed the largest device ever detonated on the face of the earth! In the midst of the insane atmospheric, oceanic, and underground testing of nuclear weapons, Russia creates Tsar Bomba, Big Ivan, or as was the official designation, RDS-220. At 50 megatons and 27 tons actual delivery weight the device was 3,800 times the destructive force of what decimated Hiroshima in 1945! The site was the Arctic Ocean Novaya Zemlya Severny Island. It is interesting to note what transpired next. In October of 1962 the Cuban Missile Crisis arose and a near WWIII was averted, and by October 10, 1963 the Nuclear Test Ban went into effect prohibiting the detonation of nuclear devices in the sea, air, or in space. Originally designed for a 100 Megaton size, it was deemed too likely to send fallout across the hemispheres so Russian scientists downgraded the explosive power of the Tsar Bomba.
Futuristic death
It is interesting to note that prior to the creation of the Atom Bomb in 1945 by the Americans, Nikola Tesla had come to the US Department of Defense with a proposal for a long range death ray device that had a 10, 000 mile range and could knock down enemy aircraft as well as ground targets. He would use an interconnected network of transmission towers to aim and fire the deadly device. Note, that this proposed weapon predated all particle beams and military laser devices that would not be unveiled until the 1980’s. The US government rejected Tesla’s proposal and Nikola would later die in 1943. Was the US war Department afraid that if they began work on the project the 5th Column or the Russians would have stolen the plans through spy operations? Has this program been researched and developed by the Allies and Axis forces untold destruction would have followed.
An enticing proposition
In the early 1980’s proposals for a new type of nuclear device that could have potentially encouraged both the Soviet Union and the United States to engage in war as the incentive would have been there for the psychopaths to capitalize upon! The “Neutron Bomb” was devised. Although not creating the high winds and outward radiation of surface of the sun type temperatures it had one unique and compelling feature. You could deliver it and detonate it killing all the people no matter what structure they sought refuge in, yet the town, the infrastructure, the buildings would remain intact, thus, the spoils of war would be recoverable. Occupation without the need to spend billions in reconstruction might have been a deadly incentive to engage in. Officially, this program has supposedly been abandoned by both sides, but can we really be assured of that?
