Having leaked the working version of the global Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement which will impact the internet and certainly my own personal use of torrents to download books, music and movies, I thought some of you might be interested in the text as it sits currently.
It's relatively easy to understand as legal documents go, will implement global rules, regulations and laws and will impact our use of the internet to some degree.
I download movies every day (we don't subscribe to cable) and we've been able to watch movies like Disney's "Up" and the movie "Precious" while they were still playing in the movie theaters. We download several movies every few days and typically have 10-20 in a que. We just watched "Avatar" while it was still in theaters. I also have 12,555 songs in my iTunes folder, many downloaded in FLAC format and converted to 1,000 kbps MP4 or AIFF files which means my sound quality is fairly high compared to standard 128 kbps MP3 format. I have well over 200 books, some in audio format and many that I haven't had a chance to read yet.
I suspect these habits will change within a year or so as theAnti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement becomes finalized and enacted across the globe. I anticipate that storing these things might requires an off-line storage device used only off-line.
This bill is designed around the legal language to determine what is intellectual property and how to counter it's theft and counterfeiting. Nothing more.
It addresses counterfeit purses, sneakers and slacks as well as music and video and the illegal access to books, video and recordings, nothing more.
Well, for those of us that have collected music and books, enough to keep us occupied and satisfied, life goes on. I will eventually miss downloading movies but don't expect my habits will change for a year or two or more. Really, I wish this protected the artists as opposed to the purveyors.
