Before speaking at the invitation-only event, the former President had lunch with President Emmanuel Macron in the Elysee palace.
Mr Macron told Reuters this was in a "private capacity" and as such there wasn't an official photograph or information about what was discussed.
The two get along; Barack Obama gave his public support to the French President during the campaign, and Mr Macron has criticised Donald Trump after his decision to scrap the climate accord. However, despite their differences, the US and French presidents have managed to maintain a polite and friendly relationship so far, after the 39-year-old leader made Trump the guest of honour of Bastille Day celebrations in Paris in July.
Mr Macron has said he still hoped to change the American president's mind on the issue.
