It may have looked like they were ready for war or some deranged person looking for his late Social Security benefits.
But it was only Federal Protective Service officers with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security who were conducting a random training operation early Tuesday morning when they surprisingly showed up at the Social Security Administration office in downtown Leesburg.
With their blue and white SUVs circled around the Main Street office, at least one official was posted on the door with a semiautomatic rifle, randomly checking identifications. And other officers, some with K-9s, sifted through the building.
"I thought someone was upset about not getting there check," said Laura Kelly, who took a friend to the office on Tuesday.
Operation Shield
According to one Homeland official in the Washington, D.C. office, Operation Shield. is an effort that uses routine, unannounced visits by FPS inspectors to test the effectiveness of contract guards, or protective security officers -- "detecting the presence of unauthorized persons and potentially disruptive or dangerous activities."
Part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, FPS is the federal law enforcement agency that provides integrated security and law enforcement services to over 9,000 federally-owned and leased buildings, facilities, properties and other assets.
Officers on the scene would not speak to the press and by noon they were gone. But Thomas Milligan, district manager for the Social Security Administration office, said while the visit came as a surprise, the office was ready. He added the officers checked videos, security measures, alarm system and more.
"It was to make sure security measures are in place and properly followed," Milligan said.

This is just a test, This is just a test, how often we heard those words on TV and Radio in the past. This is just a test to see if you will tolerate being abused and accept as normal: "To Protect our Nation" Next at the Mall, and then the doctors office as you leave, for them to review your Prescription being a legal amount. They are now demanding DNA tests of every citizen, so you can be identified in case you show up in a hospital and injured, for ID only? Remember our Social Security number would never be a National ID, for social security ONLY. Every little bit that we surrender, and we accept their promises. Well, are you ready to ReVote next Nov. to change the wrong direction our nation is leading us to surrender all rights. About the only Right we have now is to attend church, but who is that new stranger who writes down your license number as you arrive at the church? They haven't made us take in service persons in our home, YET, but every other Constitutional , and Bill of Rights has been cancelled since 911, "that was an inside job", a war of 10 years for an "inside job", to convince YOU, that to make our nation safe, they must cancel all of your Rights. Are you listening? Are you scared? Do you still believe our government would never harm us? Have you gone to your psychiatrist lately for a Mental Status review? Time for that check up, or just drive yourself to the FEMA camp, and get your SS number tattoed on your forhead. It's really a shame, a nation as wonderful as we had, and you have given in, because it's just too much trouble to fight back. I'm standing up and fighting for you.
So ridiculous!
Did they take drinks from grandpa's colestomy bag to make sure he wasn't planning on smuggling Swiss chocolate to the Iranians. I hear Rick Santorum won top -of -his- class performing a 'diving behind a rock' manouever to apprehend the old fellow at a senior citizens picnic last Sunday. At least, the smuggling of Swiss chocolates to the Iranians was Santorum's excuse for his seemingly irrational action. The GoP shrugged it off as 'appropriate vigilance in the presence of a domestic menace'.
