One hundred obese mums-to-be will be given Metformin as part of a three-year study to tackle obesity rates and reduce the number of difficult births.

Patients at Liverpool Women's Hospital will be given the drug to reduce the food supply to their unborn babies, although it will not help the mums themselves to lose weight.

Leading the trial, senior lecturer in obstetrics, Dr Andrew Weeks, said: "It is about trying to improve outcomes in pregnancy for women who are overweight.

"The problem is babies tend to be larger and many of the downsides of being overweight during pregnancy relate to the birth."

Oh my, shame on the mums who are taking part in this study.  I wonder how much they are being paid for their participation.  When I was pregnant 19 years ago, doctors agreed that no drugs, either prescription or over-the-counter, should be taken unless it was life saving for the mother.  And that included vaccines too. You didn't drink, smoke or do anything that could possibly harm the fetus.  I knew a few years ago when they began recommending the H1N1 vaccine for pregnant women that something had changed and it would not be good for unborn babies.

The company I worked for had a great health plan at the time.  I saw my chiropractor and acupuncturist regularly throughout the pregnancy and they kept me in tip top shape, none of the usual aches and pains.

How many babies come out of the womb overweight? I always thought a plump baby was a healthy one. This is utterly ridiculous, unnecessary and yes.... disturbing. The obesity problem that happens later on in many children would be a direct result of their parents feeding them too many processed foods, high fructose corn syrup, ect..... Also, many children don't get enough physical activity which can lead to weight problems too.

So what they're saying is that because the parent is obese, then the child automatically is going to eventually be obese too? How can they claim to know this for certain and talk about gullible moms ready to use their babies as guinea pigs?
