LAKEMOOR, Ill. (AP) - An analysis shows camerasmonitoring motorists at red lights in three dozen suburban Chicago communities have generated fines that have increased $3 million from 2012 to 2014.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports the most lucrative camera is at U.S. 12 and Illinois 120 in Lakemoor. The village hopes to produce $1.8 million in fines from that intersection alone - more than one-third of the municipality's total income this year.

The three cameras produce more revenue than village property, sales and income tax combined.

But state Transportation Department figures show crashes at the crossroads jumped from 18 in 2012 - the year the cameras were installed - to 35 a year later. Most are rear-end crashes.

Village President Todd Weihofen says the cameras make the intersection safer.
