One sidebar to the Kennedy legend is that he should never have been elected President.
Kennedy ran against Nixon in 1960 but only squeeked by with the help of Richard Daley, the longtime and totally corrupt Mayor of Chicago.
Both downstate Illinois Republicans and Cook County machine Democrats stole votes during this hotly contested election. Simply put: "the Democrats were better at stealing votes".
The reporting of voting totals for Illinois were delayed for hours, as both sides tried to outwait the other so they would know how many votes needed to be 'stolen' to elect their candidate.
The downstate Republicans were simply outwaited by their more savvy Cook County foes.
The increasing clammor for the totals finally got the Republicans to announce their totals and once that happened it was all over for Nixon as the Daley machine simply stole a few hundred more votes and put Kennedy into office.
The Illinois Republican Attorney General huffed and puffed, issued arrest warrants and pontificated, all for nothing and those initially charges all eventually had their charges dropped.
Nixon could have challenged the Illinois election results, but it was the middle of the Cold War and he decided that the Country would not be best served by uncertainty as to who was President. 8 years later Nixon ran and won the first of 2 terms.
As to Daley, his role was never rewarded in getting the Presidency for Kennedy as Kennedy despised Daley.
Perhaps Daley had some satisfaction when the ungrateful President was killed in Dallas.
