My Endless Quest
In love with an illusion all my life it seems
Chasing hope and unrealistic dreams
Egotistical fantasies and far flung schemes
Like the elusive mirage that can never be redeemed,
In love with the way things should really be
On a quest that will be satisfied only rarely
The mist of things never meant for me
The foolish hunt for ecstasy,
A world mired in imperfection
People who will never attain redemption
A lover or a wife operating with deception
Forgive me if I got drunk at the reception,
Somewhere along the line I bought the “Big Lie”
That love would overcome all who deny
Were all the recipients simply too shy?
The tears that go uncomforted are now dry,
Languishing on Persecution Row
The impossible distinction between friend or foe
A place where only subterfuge can grow
Far from the Yeti footprints left in the snow,
There is no reprieve for the human soul
It seems the evil one has taken his toll
The megalomaniacs have all played a role
They keep telling me God is in control,
As for the phantom of my endless quest
It will always be an exercise in futility at best
The ghost I pursue at my own behest
The very source of my own loneliness.
