Michigan Kroger stores recalled some brands of dog and cat food this weekend because the products may pose a risk to pets.
The pet food, sold at stores in 19 states including Michigan, may contain aflatoxin, according to a release from Kroger Co.
Certain varieties and sizes of Pet Pride cat food, Old Yeller dog food and Kroger dog and cat food are being recalled. Download a complete list of recalled products here.
Aflatoxin contaminates crops such corn, according to the Center for Disease Control.
Kroger advises owners to consult their veterinarian immediately if pets are sluggishness or lethargy and are reluctant to eat, have yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, and severe or bloody diarrhea, the release stated.
Kroger is attempting to contact customers who may have bought the recalled pet food. Anyone who did should not use it and return it for a refund or replacement, according to the release.
Comment
Aflatoxin-producing members of Aspergillus are common and widespread in nature. They can colonize and contaminate grain before harvest or during storage. Host crops are particularly susceptible to infection by Aspergillus following prolonged exposure to a high humidity environment or damage from stressful conditions such as drought, a condition which lowers the barrier to entry.
