Everyone needs to watch this one (this was on TV as a short drama series in four parts in 1994).  This is happening right now.   In this story, patient zero, contaminated by a government bio-weapon, dies at a gas station in Texas.   The plague spreads rapidly from there, and all the efforts at quarantine fail.  The CDC, the DoD, and the major media are actually portrayed realistically here.  The psychopath general quotes Nietzsche : "Things fall apart.  The center does not hold."  The psychopath CDC doctor, behind the safety of glass containment walls, watches a patient die.  He shows no emotion, as he quips, "Gosh, it works so fast."  Soldiers burn bodies in sewer treatment plants.  Totally ineffective flu remedies are already on the market.   Total denial by government officials at press conferences.  News is suppressed, but not completely.   One patriot radio show host is assassinated on air by a paramilitary team, as she exposes the truth that isn't being told on television.  The kill rate of Captain Trips, the superflu, is 99%.   Later in the series, in Part 3 or 4, there is a blood moon, (just like the one that's coming up Oct. 8th) when Randall Flagg finally beds Nadine.   The Stand is rich in allegory (the dark night of the soul, journeying through a tunnel in New York City surrounded by the dead, for example.)
