... Glass Steagall Today, Before Its Too Late
The world will change this week as Mr Obama sees his popularity, which rivals that of his predecessor, converted into a trouncing in the mid term elections in the USA. Whether or not that results in some kind of market event, it is becoming more obvious by the day that we are rapidly heading for the buffers once again as the world's largest banks struggle to stay afloat.
Banco Santander has been trying to avoid bankruptcy through the parasitic devouring of anything that comes close to having an asset value. But time is running out, and Santander has had to revise its figures for the third quarter downwards, while at the same time attempting to raise an extra Euro 3 billion through a public offering in the UK.
As usual the central bank solution to all this is bailout.
Is this a sensible strategy? Imagine: you are floating across the channel in a bath. Someone pulls out the plug. Is it sensible at this point to start bailing? Or would it be more sensible to put the plug back in?
The plug in the case of the financial system was called Glass Steagall.
If we are to survive this crisis - and make no mistake this is a much broader crisis than just the financial system - we need to get control of the banks, and start rebuilding our infrastructure. The world, never mind Britain, is already eating its food reserves. This year's grain and root crops have failed right around the world, and people are going to starve to death in the usual places. Food prices have already risen astronomically on the futures markets, and these prices will filter through to us.
The solution isn't so hard - or wouldn't be if we had anyone in Parliament or the media willing to tell the truth.
We must separate the investment banks from the high street banks. We must do it now. We must agree a standard for banking behaviour. Any debt outstanding which does not meet that standard must be written off. The banks must be put in administration, and savings and pensions protected. The Bank of
England must be replaced with a national bank, and we must take control over our national currency back from the commercial banks. We must begin a massive publicly funded building programme for national infrastructure, which should include hospitals, education, high speed rail, power & water systems
(any colour but green), and agriculture.
We must do this, and we must do it now.
