Dream Act immigration reform bill to be put to US Congress this week Democrats hope the bill, which will offer path to citizenship to 2m illegal immigrants, will win over Latinos before mid-term elections
The US Congress is poised to vote this week on a bill that offers more than 2 million young illegal immigrants a path to citizenship, a move that will re-open the toxic debate on the issue ahead of the November mid-term elections.
The vote could come as early as tomorrow.
The bill is being introduced by the Democratic Senate leader, Harry Reid, and is facing widespread opposition from Republicans.
The Democratic party sees it as a no-lose situation. If the Republicans vote against, the Democrats hope this will cement their position as the party of the Latinos.
A Republican senator, John Cornyn, accused the Democrats of being "cynical and transparently political" rather than interested in genuine immigration reform.
The bill would allow young illegal immigrants to become citizens if they have completed a university or college education or served two years in the military.
Obama, responding to anger from Latino leaders this month at his failure to deliver on his pledge, urged them to get out and vote in November, and portrayed the Democrats as their friends and the Republicans as their enemies. He told Latinos not to forget "who is standing with you, and who is standing against you".
The Pentagon, struggling to maintain levels of recruitment in the face of troop demands in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere, is among the backers of the bill.
In a tactical device by the Democrats, the bill has been tacked on to legislation approving defence spending for next year, making it harder for the Republicans to obstruct it. If the defence spending approval is held up the Pentagon will have to seek emergency funding elsewhere.
The bill is labelled the Dream Act (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) and insists that would-be students are of good moral character, came to the US before the age of 16, obtained a degree from an institute of higher education or "served in the uniformed services for at least two years and, if discharged, received an honourable discharge".
Supporters of the bill say that young people should not be penalised for the behaviour of their parents in entering the US illegally.
But opponents say it rewards lawbreakers. Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which opposes the bill, said: "At a time when our country is at war and our troops are fighting and dying in Afghanistan, the use of a bill to authorise funding for our military to benefit illegal aliens exemplifies why the American public has grown contemptuous of the way today's Washington operates."

Patriot Horse...why not use the money we spend on the illegal wars to pay for this long list. The reason the country is broke is due to all these endless wars and the wall street crooks ...now we got people all looking at skin color and ranting and raving

What about a situtation like this... you see a young mother or an old lady in line ...you say "hurrmmph I am entitled to be in line before you old woman ...me first ..I was born here...my great grand parents came here at killed the Native Americans for this land...hell we ran "you illegal Mexicans off this land yeras ago" ...The old "Me First" attitude......oh and ..all these folks her riding (cheating) the welfare system that are white and were born here too so... ."them First too" ...Yet at the same time saying, but I'm such a caring considerate person ...just get behind me Im better than you..."get out of here" .... I hope you find some comfort in your stressful position, that you shared here, that of "you" thinking you and "yours" are the privileged ones ... I don't mean to ridicule you ...but your assumed and stated privileged status and pompous assumptions really makes me sad for our country ... Good luck out there I hope you are "first everywhere" you go for some reason I think you do need it to be "You First Always"

I'm not against illegal immigrants either and I try everyday to help the homeless...becasue i love all people... That said many people "hate me for caring about others" and call me out on line for doing so. I used to the bad vibes and hate directed at me and people I care about ... I also film the police (cop watch), protest torture use, anti war, pro peace in the middle east, 911 truth, anti NAFTA anti CAFTA , in solidarity with Latin America, anti-military, independent media videograpgher for human rights and civil rights.... but does that mean I got to take people in and cloth them ..give me a break. Lets try and show some love around here...lets join in solidarity remove the walls between us all ...reach across and shake a hand, ...just saying ...lets show some love for mankind and each other

For those that are all for amnesty, I personally don't understand how people for illegal immigration are usually against NAFTA. They are mirror image operations with the very same end results and only the NWO elites as winners. Perplexing.

As the site admin I must say it is neither fair nor logical to categorize a few peoples statements with this community as a whole.
On a personal note I wish I could feed every hungry person and take in every homeless person. But I can not and asking my countries citizens to foot the bill is illegal, and unconstitutional. I invite those who support this amnesty to take in a family, cloth them, house them, pay for their medical care ect.
