The LHC is ready to collide particles this morning. CERN has started the live webcast and you can watch the LHC control room and be there first hand when it blows up - just kidding.
The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is set to generate collisions at 7 TeV (3.5 TeV per beam). It is not known yet when the first collision will happen.
Currently CERN expects the first collisions in a couple of hours.
Gary, mathematics is what was used to prove water is on the moon. Both you and I accept that the moon does have water and that acceptance is an acceptance of the mathematics behind the technology used to determine, using light, that there's water on the moon yet we've never actually had physical proof of such.
Further, in a court of law, since that technology has never been used to prove the existence of water on a planet outside of earth, extraterrestrially, it might be effectively argued that it really isn't proof beyond a shadow of a doubt and even possibly that it's not even proof by a preponderance of the evidence, but still you and I accept that the moon has proven to hold molecules of water, or more accurately frozen water, and even more accurately water molecules frozen within other molecules and gases. Still, we believe it based on math.
So I think perception has a great deal to do with these subjects.
My statement that their theories can be proven was misstated. I meant to imply that their theories are undergoing the scientific process attached to proof, and they'll thus be proven, or not.
I think there are a great many scientists that understand these theories are just that, theories or hypotheses. The math we're discussing isn't a math with definite propositions, like 2 + 2 = 4, and I know you know that.
The math we're discussing, which I have a very limited working knowledge of is based on logic with reasoning attached as opposed to known or finite answers and it involves speculation, which is perhaps what makes it so fascinating to so many people.
As Einstein said, "Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas."
Petty stuff. Precisely why I have difficulty here. Of course Greg rarely has more to say then a few words but if we look back a few pages, how would you have effectively explained yourself Gary? And how would I have effectively answered.
