Net providers begin warning of illegal downloads

ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Internet users who illegally share music, movies or television shows online could soon receive warning notices from the nation's five major Internet service providers.

The Copyright Alert System, organized by the recording and film industry, is being activated this week to target consumers using peer-to-peer software.

Under the new system, complaints will prompt an Internet service provider — such as Verizon or AT&T — to notify a customer whose Internet address has been detected sharing files illegally. A person will be given up to six opportunities to stop before the Internet provider will take more drastic steps, such as temporarily slowing their connection, or redirecting Internet traffic until they acknowledge they received a notice or review educational materials about copyright law.

Consumers who maintain they have been wrongly accused would be forced to pay $35 to appeal the decision. The fee would be reimbursed if they prevail.

Proponents say the focus is on deterring the average consumer rather than chronic violators. The director of the organization behind the system, Jill Lesser of the Center for Copyright Infringement, said in a blog post Monday that the program is "meant to educate rather than punish, and direct (users) to legal alternatives."

Each Internet provider is expected to implement their own system. The program gives each customer five or six "strikes" after....

Wow Hollywood.. Im going to get B on here tomarrow night, you two have way more in common than I thought lol.!!! I was reading this blog to him over the phone (he was driving from Ohio to here) and he said to tell you that he has been doing it since the 8088 processor days, and started out on a Tandy1000. He said back then, everything was in monochrome (think i spelled that right)(I suck at spelling sorry). but anyways haha. Just wanted to jump in here and post that for him., Jammin on your homepage!!!! Again!! yes again!

commodore VIC20, BASIC, and a cassette tape for back up ;) acoustic coupler modem @ a smokin 300 baud for the exciting chess match w/ ur neighbor, there were color monitors....either orange or green ;)

He said he ran a Underground BBS system on a 1200 baud something or another lol. I tried to write it downbut he was going through the mountains in Virginia, Ghent I think.. but he said yeah the green/orange/different shades of green was monochrome. He said to tell you he had a 10mb hard drive. his first program would let you send a file from one computer to another. Him an another guy created it. It would go out and get the packets and deliver them to other computers. Which I know what a hard drive is etc, but isn't that small lol? 10mb? But he said it was plenty of room for a bulletin board system with chat and some games. He said that if he took the power of just his desktop here and the size of the hard drive that you would prob have to use a football field stacked with the old tandy1000s to equel the data that just his desktop would hold. Wow.. I wasn't born then haha but sounds wild that you all could do that type of stuff on such limited resources. He said he thinks he started out with 16mb of memory.

And he told me megabytes not gigabytes. Don't know the difference other than I only see stuff with GB gigabytes like hard drive sizes, and memory.

He said he had enough floppy disk to fill up several trucks too. And said to ask you if you remember Doom? and wolf something wolfsting I think he said.

He said it was top of the line state of the art equipment. His friend had opened a computer store which is what got him into it.

Corporations have threatened us enough.  Unless they want a violent backlash, they better back off.  There are a LOT more of us than there are of them.

theres the magic formula.....we outnumber the shit outta these power pricks ;)

Yeah I wanted to say .. You might be amazed at how many people turn against their neighbors for the sake of entertainment etc .. But thats a huge can of un-enlightened worms.

i think i'm safe, neighbors here rely on me, for they are techno illiterates, and between sat tv, cable tv, internet, laptops and wireless routers they know they would have to pay serious fiat paper to the "professionals" ;) (besides, I'll take away my 5watt neighborhood AP repeater and then no more free neighborhood net...lol) equivalent to taking the ball and going home...hehehehee

I'm moving in next door lol

LOL, and I on the other side

Wow, will they ever have there hands full with this one. It's to easy to hide your IP address now days. And like the article says, if someone uses an open Wi Fi connection or coffee house etc, this plan just wouldn't have much affect. Even the software they use on songs, dvd movies etc, can be stripped or decrypted easily, and some companies that have the software to do this come out with updates as fast as the protection is implemented from the dvd makers. Once it's stripped or decrypted of the css protection

Alot of people don't realize that Some methods of copy protection have also led to criticisms because it caused inconvenience for honest users, secretly installing additional software to watch activity on user's computer to detect copying.

Remember though, if you have purchased a cd, or dvd, that under the fair-use doctrine, it  states that you can create copies of the media you’ve purchased for personal use, so long as it stays in your possession and is not publicly distributed.

Oh yeah, AnyDVD, and CLONE DVD is exellent software to backup your "purchased legally" Dvds and cds. They also have game software, but haven't used it.

If you use bittorrent you can use a proxy.

Just pick a proxy with high anonymity.

I use uTorrrent. You can config it with any type (HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS4/5, etc)

Cheers!
