Jeremy Hunt tells border strikers: the Olympics will be the highlight of your careers

Jeremy Hunt has urged immigration officials to break a strike planned for tomorrow saying it would be the high point of their careers to work on the eve of the Olympic Games.

The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport was speaking as Home Office lawyers seek an injunction at the High Court to prevent the 24 hour strike going ahead tomorrow, on the grounds that the ballot may not have been conducted properly.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, Mr Hunt said that even the most "militant" of union members should come together to support the Games.

"For an immigration officer, Thursday is one of the biggest days in their professional career," he added. "It is a day when the eyes of the world will be on them and the vast majority of them will want to do a really good job and show what they are capable of.

"People have their grievances but surely the day before the opening ceremony of the Olympics is not the day to do it."

Mr Hunt said that only 10 per cent of border staff - one in eight - had participated in the strike ballot, organised by the Public and Commercial Services Union which is headed by Mark Serwotka.

The minister claimed that the union leader did not have the support of most border guards, adding: "He must be losing confidence that what he is doing actually represents the views of his members.

"This is the wrong time to pursue a grievance. Even our most militant unions can recognise that this is not the moment."

The strike is planned for what Mr Hunt predicted would be the busiest ever day at Heathrow Airport but, he said, he was confident enough border officials would turn up to work.

To staff all the desks at Heathrow, a minimum of 550 guards need to be on duty, and the minister said: "We have 584 shifts now confirmed for Thursday despite the strike, so I am very confident we will get through.

"We have can be very confident in the contingency plans. Queues at Heathrow have been the dogs that didn't bark."

Politicians and Olympics staff are increasingly irritated at the actions of some trade union leaders, as hundreds of thousands of athletes, sporting officials and spectators pour into London for the Games.

The capital's over-burdened transport system is at risk of even further strain, after some London Underground staff, who have already been promised an Olympics bonus of £1,000, threatened to begin a work-to-rule regime.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union are protesting about the use of casual workers on the Tube, and the way that the Olympics pay deal is due to be implemented.

A proposed strike during the Games by London bus drivers was averted only when they secured a bonus of more than £500.

About 20 years ago I read an article about five youngfellows in Africa all under sixteen.

Four of the five could run  faster by far than the winners in the Olympics that year.So anyway, all these gold medals that are going to be won over the next few weeks, will make these people the best in the world at whatever event they win.Thats not true.

If the organisers of this farce channelled that energy into helping the underprivileged,it would be a much better use of peoples time and energy.
