Organizers expect between 7,000 and 10,000 people in the region for the weekend as part of the Ferguson October movement.
Though it’s called the Weekend of Resistance, one organizer, Larry Fellows, says the goal is to be peaceful in the marches, block parties and prayer vigils. There will also be “teach-ins” – seminars on knowing your rights.
“The message to the community is pretty much this is not just a local issue, this is not just a Ferguson issue, this is not a St. Louis issue – this is a nationwide, this is an international issue,” he says.
Fellows says organizers have been in close contact with police to facilitate many of the activities.
There will be events in downtown St. Louis, Ferguson, and Clayton.
“We’ll have a couple liaisons for each day to making sure that they know what’s going on,” he says. “I know they’re definitely helping out with Saturday making sure, you know, we have the road clear and traffic is blocked off.”
