The soldiers probably would train in the U.S. for a short period before going overseas to replace troops already in Africa.
“The soldiers of the 16th Engineer Brigade have the skill sets and track record to perform their work to the highest standards,” said Maj. Gen. Deborah A. Ashenhurst, Ohio adjutant general.
U.S. troops deploying to western Africa will receive training and equipment to protect themselves in Africa, Ashenhurst said.
Nearly 2,200 U.S. troops are in the region now, and the number will peak at close to 3,000 next month, the Army reported.
Returning solders will undergo an observation program to make sure they have not contracted the virus.
The Ebola virus has killed more than 5,100 people in Africa, most of them in Liberia.
