In addition to their extensive relationship with the NSA, it was revealed last month that AT&T nets $10 million annually for handing over user call data to the CIA. Public Knowledge attorney Harold Feld recently argued in detail that AT&T was violating Section 222 of the Communications Act which prohibits such data sales -- to anyone -- without user consent. Feld noted that none of the exemptions in the Act would apply to AT&T's relationship with the CIA.
Now Public Knowledge has formally complained to the FCC in a joint letter with the EFF and other groups, urging the agency to enforce the rules requiring that AT&T allow users to opt-out of this data sharing. According to the group, a perusal of the AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon privacy policies that also indicates they also believe "it is okay to sell or share similar records."
