COLUMBUS (Chris Vanocur) -- The federal probe into Columbus' red light camera scandal is taking some dramatic new twists and turns. ABC 6/FOX 28 has uncovered new information about the man at the center of the Redflex investigation.
Redflex's CEO recently pleaded guilty to bribing Columbus officials to land the contracts. Both Mayor Michael Coleman and mayoral front-runner Andrew Ginther have found themselves swept up in the controversy.
A Redflex lobbyist gave campaign money to Coleman and has been linked to Ginther as well. Now there is new information suggesting that the federal investigation may be much wider than previously thought.
Jeff Berding is a former Cincinnati councilman who supported red light cameras in his city. In 2005 and in 2007, Berding received 1,000 dollar contributions from a John Raphael. Raphael is a former Columbus city council aide and lobbyist for Redflex. He also now finds himself at the center of the feds Redflex investigation.
Tthose weren't the only contributions from someone named Raphael. In 2007, a woman named Patricia Raphael also made a $1,000 contribution to Berding. She's believed to be John Raphael's mother.
ABC 6/FOX 28 also found another $1,000 contribution to Berding from a Thomas Raphael, reportedly John Raphael's brother. It's believed that this is the same Thomas Raphael who now works for the Franklin County Board of Elections.
