Lee County Deputies Tied Suspect to a Chair, Gagged Him, and Pepper-Sprayed Him to Death

From Fox 13 in Tampa comes the horrifying story of Nick Christie, a 62-year-old Ohio man who was detained by the Lee County Sheriff's Office for being publicly intoxicated. While Christie's wife asked that he be taken to the hospital, Lee County cops decided instead to strip Christie naked, tie him to a chair, cover his face, and then pepper spray him repeatedly, until he died:

The District 21 Medical Examiner ruled his death was a homicide because he had been restrained and sprayed with pepper sprayed by law enforcement officers. But to this day, nobody has ever been charged with a crime, and the Lee County State Attorney cleared the sheriff's office of any wrong doing.

It's been more than two and a half years and his wife still can't accept what happened.

"I was shocked. This was something out of a horror movie," says Joyce Christie. She said her husband was depressed and was showing signs of erratic behavior a few days before leaving for Florida.

She called authorities and pleaded with them to take her husband to a hospital and be given his medications. Instead, he was taken to jail for disorderly intoxication.

Her lawsuit alleges he was pepper sprayed 10 times over a 48-hour period, at times while in a restraint chair.

Monshay Gibbs was a deputy trainee at the jail at the time. In a video deposition, she testified that she thought the way Nick Christie was treated was excessive.

"He had a spit mask on and was naked," she said on the video while under oath. Gibbs testified that Christie pleaded with guards to take off the spit mask because he couldn't breathe.

Tazers and pepper spraying is excessive force on ordinary citizens they are tools of war..   They work for us.  When is the last time you needed a cop?  I have never needed one.  Why do the "boys in blue" always get a pass..   i have heard so much bad stuff lately...   i would never tell my kid to find a cop if anything was wrong.  They would be better off with a shotty & on there own than to ask  a cop for help... They don't help anything.  Can someone tell me why we have them again?  HMMM lets see, ok if your in a car accident NOPE , your better off without them.  HMMM someone robbed ya? NOPE  you'll never see your stuff again.  If there is an intruder in your house? MAYBE! ONLY .. after you shoot the bastard yourself because if you wait for the cops you'll be raped beaten and maybe dead.  All i hear is how we need more cops, go to a bad neighborghood!  uh you won't see a cop anywhere... Why ? they are all a bunch of cowards who are out gunned by the drug dealers and will not do sh*t for you but go over the speed limit in a nice neighborhood and they will nail you to a cross..   This guy who died at the hands of the c ops ....   what a horrible shame the cop who did it should rot in jail forever and be anally raped daily

I'm an ex Deputy and I can tell u they like the young Deputies and Officers that abuse their powers! The Deputies or Officers responsible for this should have been charged with Official Opression, and Murder! The Administrations of these Departments are running off the good Deputies and Officers! Their weeding out the ones that believe in their oaths that they took when they put on a badge. The reason why I know this is because I was one of them! Their preparing for the Police State. Alot of my brother Law Enforcement Officers I know have been forced to resign. I would have stopped this from happening  that's why they did not want me around!

I have a place in Lee County - this is the first I have heard of this - it would seem that the Lee County Sheriff has declared war on the people who elect him - excuse me he apparently a tourist.

This happens more than you might think. Not always cases being this extreme, but cases involving police, on or off duty, breaking laws that would land anyone else in federal prison -- and they just get away with it.

Take a good look because THAT is exactly what tyranny looks like. Now get off your lazy holiday hungry butts and help out the Ron Paul campaign and stop making pathetic excuses otherwise. He's the best thing this countries got for office.
