Questions about a popular dog treat and a mysterious illness making thousands of dogs sick
Thousands of dogs are ill or dying across North America and it's been going on for years. No one can say what, exactly, made the dogs sick. But owners say they fed their dogs a seemingly harmless product: a popular chicken jerky treat.
There are warnings on both sides of the border about the treats, which are made in China and marketed by some of the biggest pet food companies. But there is no definitive link between the treats and the illness. And there have been no recalls.
Tom Harrington is on the trail of the mysterious illness, putting the treats to the test, and asking questions about a product that is not regulated in Canada. We ask: when things go wrong, who is fighting for Fido?

Oh come on now! You'd actually want to feed your dog (your best beloved friend) hot dogs instead of real food? Please see www.rawfed.com. The best treats for a dog (and you know exactly what is in them) are dried liver you can make yourself. Simply lay some liver out on a pan lined with foil....and bake very slowly until dried. Just as cheap as hot dogs! PLEASE understand that the entire pet food industry is very very corrupt!!!!! They have even been found dead cats & dogs in canned pet food...with their flea collars left on! The USDA even allows for pet euthanasia chemicals in dog food! these kind of dog treats are a rip-off...2-3 ounces for 3-4 dollars, and who know what is in them.
better, buy a cheap pack of hotdogs. one dollar for 16 ounces and cut it up into treat sizes...better for dog and they will like them more.

From what I'm reading it seems to mostly affect toy-to-medium sized dogs. Is this correct? Is it partly due to the fact that a treat comprises a larger portion of their diet due to their size? Are they checking for new novel viruses or prions? So many unanswered questions. My nasty little chihuahua x terrier LOVES these, and they're the only treat he never gets bored of. CRAP!

Hi! This is VERY IMPORTANT for any of you who love their pets. ALL COMMERCIAL PET FOOD IS CRAP. A dog is a carnivore, not an omnivore, the Smithsonian even says so. A dog's DNA is 99.97% identical to a gray wolf's DNA. Kibble & carbs are cancer-inducing killers in our pets, and you do not want to know what goes into canned pet food. It is as big a battle as the tobacco companies...except this time it is THE FOOD COMPANIES, and they're feeding the dredges of the food industry and making our dogs very sick....all with blessings from our veterinarians, advertising machine and government. IT'S DESPICABLE!!! I have fed my dogs & cats whole raw food for about 10 years now...and never see the vet. They do not get fleas. They do not get sick. Their teeth are sparkling white, and they have no doggy odor and they even have wonderful breath! Here is a link to get you started...if you knew what was really in ALL pet food, you couldn't feed it to your worst enemy.

The FDA’s Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) calls for truth in labeling for pet foods as well as human foods.
So… are the labels on the pet food you purchase accurate?
This question, posed recently in an industry trade journal article, was actually aimed at pet food manufacturers. The reason for the query, according to PetfoodIndustry.com:
“Unintentional mislabeling, especially with protein sources and gluten content, is not uncommon.”
I’m sure this news is alarming to those of you who buy commercial pet food for your dog or cat. Increasingly, pet parents are carefully reading ingredient labels to insure the products they offer their furry family members are not only high quality, but also free of ingredients that could be problematic or dangerous for their pet.
