Sixty-one-year-old John Hubbard is now under arrest, accused of opening fire and allegedly assaulting a neighbor who came to check on his property. The victim was injured, but was not shot.
Hawaii Island Police responded to reports of gunshots fired near the intersection of Kahukai and Makamae Streets in the Leilani Estates Subdivision Tuesday afternoon at 12:21 p.m.
The 32-year-old victim from Leilani Estates told police that he and several acquaintances were approached by a man in a pickup truck after surveying the area of his former residence that had since been taken by lava.
The suspect in the pickup truck, 61-year-old John Hubbard, allegedly assaulted, then pointed a firearm at the victim and those he was with, and ordered them to immediately leave the area.
After some arguing, the suspect fired several shots. No one was injured. The victim sustained non-threatening injuries stemming from the assault.
Hubbard was arrested near the scene Tuesday around 1 p.m. He was taken to the Hilo cellblock while detectives continue the investigation.
