Just as in every other country, the (native) French population is comprised of the apathetic, those that now realize that voting is a total waste of time and the remainder hungrily eat up the bullshit they are fed.

The French don't really talk politics in polite conversation, unless they know you personally, feel comfortable conversing with you on all topics and there is plenty of alcohol.

The exception is if they are hardcore leftists and they'll make their personal politics known to to you within 2 minutes of being introduced. (As with leftists in every other western nation, they use the word 'fascist' to describe anyone that deviates from their prescribed thinking.)

As far, I have not met many French thought criminals under the age of 40 - I know they exist, but they don't exactly draw attention to themselves.
