The tendency to pick sides has never been as obvious as it is now. As far as the latest news goes, people are unbelievably blinded by their preconceived ideas and need to be on the winning side. The tragedy in Ferguson is no different. When the incident first happened, the residents of the area were understandably upset.

The majority of residents are black. If the circumstances were the same except for Michael Brown being a young white man in a polo shirt, the outcome would have been far different.  Not to say that the police officer wouldn’t have been rude. The type of person who chooses law enforcement as a career is usually someone who likes to dominate and bully others. The topics of police brutality and racial profiling are not really up for debate. They are facts.

The public does not know all of the facts in this case. However, I think it can be safely said that Michael Brown did not have to die that day. Police are not trained to deescalate a situation. They are taught to shoot to kill. They do not use the least harmful method for situations. Dan Wilson could have shot Michael Brown in the leg. He could have shot him more than once if needed, but with non-lethal hits.

It has become pretty evident that Brown was not a model citizen. He had a thug mentality, and showed an aggressive nature.  That does not make it right for officer Wilson to become judge, jury, and executioner all wrapped up in one package. If Brown committed a crime he should have been restrained, taken to the police station, and given due process in keeping with our constitution.

Police should be accepted into their position based on certain personality traits. Some of those are quick thinking, knowledge of the law and proper procedures, and higher than average self control. They should be held to a higher standard than the people they are dealing with.  Officer Wilson showed none of those as far as I can tell. Even if his side of the story is true, he shot Brown from about 35’ away. That means he could have used less than lethal force to subdue Brown.
The supposed “dozen witnesses” corroborating the police side of the story can be traced to a tweet by Christine Byers of the St. Lois Post-Dispatch who was actually on FMLA leave from the paper. She has been forced to backtrack on her statement because it was just a rumor she heard. The damage was already done.

As far as the protesting goes, the people have a right to protest injustice. The original protesters were exercising that right. Even after the media was whipped into a frenzy there were protesters that wanted genuine grievances addressed. They wanted transparency by the police force. They wanted the full facts of the matter exposed and not swept under the rug as so often happens. They wanted Officer Wilson prosecuted if he was found to have killed Michael Brown needlessly. They wanted to know justice would prevail.
It only took a short time for the protests to be taken over by thugs. When people from out of town showed up, the looting and burning began.  Local witnesses said the people doing this were outsiders. I don’t know who brought them in, or if they showed up on their own. Let’s face it - there are bad people in this world who will take advantage of situations. That doesn’t mean that the people of that area should sit down and be quiet. They have issues with police brutality that need to be answered. There is also speculation and some evidence pointing to paid provocateurs.

I am seeing this issue create even more racial division between people. This fits in perfectly with  the plans of those in power. Divide the people. Cause them to argue amongst themselves. They will be less focused on their rights to live as free human beings and how they are being whittled away bit by bit. Our “leaders” are out of control.
