The Twinkie apocalypse is upon us: Closing of Hostess causes nationwide junk food preparedness surge among desperate Americans

Dear fellow junk food aficionados: A great chapter of American history is coming to an end. The Texas-based Hostess company, the producer of Twinkies, Ho Ho's and other fine pastries, has been gutted by a union dispute and is closing its doors for good. A total of 18,500 people will lose their jobs, but even more catastrophically, we will no longer have Twinkies!

Hostess Brands Inc. today announced that it is winding down operations and has filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeking permission to close its business and sell its assets, including its iconic brands and facilities. Bakery operations have been suspended at all plants, says a statement on the Hostess Brands website.

This is devastating news for America.

I am guessing this makes it ok to eat them????? What??? It is still poison!!

It still amazes me that a poison snack cake united millions of Americans in the grocery line, at the work place, in general walks of life!

But the crumbling of our country barely gets a glance.

What is it that drives the human psyche???? Sweets????

I didnt buy them anyhow.  The shelf life is incredible!  I heard the only thing that survives a nuclear blast is cockroaches and Twinkies. :)

Apparently there is still a Twinkie in the white house.

Ahhh what a glorious day for Mooshell and her union friends. The former Hostess slaves are ready to move FORWARD and stimulate the economy in the form of unemployment (Piglosi approved) of course.
The progs have already stated that unions are not to blame.

I went to the store to buy some food for the house after work and got into a discussion about the Twinkies situation with other customers in line. None of them could believe it!! This was a very HOT topic it spanned all generations. All the people were on the same line, all in agreement.  One of the other customers told me that a box of Twinkies like him and his wife had in the cart was selling already on EBay already for 100.00 dollars and 5 dollars for shipping!!!!!!! Now as I was standing there my first thought was da*n, I knew that dollar was devaluing fast, cause surly no one would pay that much to stuff those chemicals in their mouth!! As you can see.......(quote from suzies post)......they started substituting ingredients in the original recipe with artificial ingredients.

Then as I stood there a little longer and watched what was happening I came to a sad realization. The American people all knew about this no matter what walk of life they came from, and it breached a gap normally closed between these people, and for the first time in my life I saw everyone in total agreement!!!!!!!!! Over the f*cking Twinkies, not the dire straights of the worlds economy, wars or GMOs.....I was sad as I left the store.......

mmmmm  ~~ twinkie's

hahaha  too bad they really don't last forever ..

  • Myth: Twinkies contain a chemical used in embalming fluid which helps account for some of their extreme longevity.  (Twinkies contain no such chemical.)
Here are some actual real Twinkie facts:
Twinkies were created in 1930 as ladyfinger-shaped spongecakes.   They were first thought up by James A. Dewar, the Vice President of Continental Bakeries that sold under the Hostess brand.  Dewar was trying to come up with a way to utilize the machines used to make cream filled strawberry shortcake when strawberries were out of season and the machines normally sat idle.  So he got an idea to create a banana cream filled cake.  That’s right.  Originally, Twinkies were filled with banana cream, which I suppose explains why they chose to make them look as they do.

During World War II, bananas became scarce.  Hostess then decided to switch the cream inside Trinkies to vanilla cream.  This ended up being much more popular than the banana filled version. So when bananas became readily available again, they chose not to switch back.

The name “Twinkie” was also thought up by James Dewar.  On the way to a marketing meeting, he saw a billboard advertising “Twinkle-Toes Shoes” and thought up the name “Twinkies”.

When Twinkies first came out, they not only were banana filled, but they also had an incredibly low shelf life.  This was due primarily to the dairy products contained in Twinkies giving them only a two day shelf life on average.  This obviously cut into the profit margins.

With the need for longer shelf life, they started substituting ingredients in the original recipe with artificial ingredients.   Among those artificial ingredients is cellulose gum, which gives Twinkie cream its smooth feel.  Another place you can find this cellulose gum is in rocket fuel.
