Magician needs disaster plan for his rabbit, USDA says in letter

Marty the Magician received a letter this summer from the U.S. Agriculture Department informing him that he needed a disaster plan for his rabbit.

Magician Marty Hahne learned he needed a license for his rabbit when a USDA inspector showed up at one of his magic shows in 2005, the Washington Post reports. Hahne complied. He is among several children’s magicians required to get a license under a 1970 law covering animals exhibited at shows.

To get his license, Hahne paid $40 a year, took his rabbit to the vet and submitted to surprise inspections of his home. He must prepare an itinerary if he takes the rabbit away from home for an extended period. Because of a new rule proposed after Hurricane Katrina, he was told he needs a disaster plan to save the rabbit from a variety of calamities. “Fire. Flood. Tornado. Air conditioning going out. Ice storm. Power failures,” Hahne explained to the Post.

The article questions the provision. “For Hahne,” the story said, “the saga has provided a lesson in one of Washington’s bad old habits—the tendency to pile new rules on top of old ones, with officials using good intentions and vague laws to expand the reach of the federal bureaucracy.”

Apparently Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack shares those concerns. After the Washington Post published its article online, a department spokeswoman announced that the rule will reviewed as it applies to small operations. Vilsack “asked that this be reviewed immediately and common sense be applied,” spokeswoman Courtney Rowe told the newspaper.

(NaturalNews) The age of reason is over, as we know it, destroyed by an out-of-control and perpetually growing federal bureaucracy that has morphed into a fourth branch of government.

How bad has it gotten? Would you believe that the bureaucracy is so insane that even magicians have to file a "disaster plan" with the government for animals they use in their act.

As the saying goes, you can't make this stuff up. Hat tip to The American Dream website:

Central planning in this country is getting completely and totally out of control. These days, you can hardly do anything without running into a suffocating web of red tape. For example, a small-time magician from Missouri that does magic shows for kids was absolutely horrified when he learned that the Obama administration is requiring him to submit a 32 page "disaster plan" for the rabbit that he uses in his shows.

SOON, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO WALK OUT SIDE WITH OUT A PERMIT, CRASH HELMET< AND DROOL CUP.

And the Government is worried about a bunny;)!

LOL! First comment @ this article.

I do not think it is unreasonable to have rules that require him to give some thought, in advance, to how he would try to save the rabbit in various calamities.  This reduces the chance that he might flee in a mindless panic, leaving the rabbit to its fate.  Of course, to the extent he has trained the rabbit to disappear, that should be quite an effective technique for dealing with a broad range of problems.

Sorry, I don't know how to sugar coat it with out being mean. I apologize in advance for this comment.

MORON!   Can I buy an F to place in front of that comment?

Damn... the rabbit has more rights than we Americans do. I love our bunny at home but if the shtf... bunny will make some pretty incredible stew and slippers, JK..LOL!

kill it and eat it seems like a good plan

Look at these State Lic. Foster parents.

We are from the government and we're here to help. We love Bunnies!!!

Hmmm...I wonder,  Do they need to file a disaster plan?

The more that government expands, the less liberty and freedom we are left with.  Yes, there will always be a need for government, but our founding fathers intended for government to be much, much more limited than it is currently.

In Amerika today, if you want to do almost anything you must get the permission of the government to do it first.  And usually you have to pay a fee for that permission.

For example, if you want to get married you have to get the permission of the government.

If you want to open a business, usually there is at least one license that you have to get, and in many areas there are several different kinds of licenses that you will have to apply for.

If you want to drive somewhere, you must have a license to drive, you must have your car registered, you must have your taxes paid and in many areas you must have one or more inspections of your vehicle done on a regular basis.

In fact, it is very difficult to think of anything that one can do (especially outside of a home) without the permission of the government.

In the United States today, we are being strangled by a never ending onslaught of laws, rules and regulations.  Every single moment of every single day there are control freak bureaucrats out there that are dreaming up more rules and regulations to impose on us all.

Anyone that believes that this is still “the land of the free and the home of the brave” is delusional!
