A century of sci-fi movie predictions have just been realized in the 6-foot-tall, robust android called Atlas.
Boston Dynamics has been busy working on an entrant for DARPA's Virtual Robotics Challenge, a contest aimed to create robots that can help in disaster situations. Of course, they could also be used by the military...
Now, Boston Dynamics has revealed its entrant: A 6-foot-tall humanoid robot called Atlas.
Compared to the bumbling, tottering, and slow humanoid robots that have hit the media before, you may be shocked at how resilient Atlas is. The machine has sophistication that approaches the stuff of science fiction. It can cope with unexpected trip hazards, survive being knocked off balance by a 20-pound weight, and if the tricks of its developmental predecessor, Petman, are anything to go by, it can climb over obstacles and autonomously navigate to a certain degree.
Give it a few years and a robot like Atlas may be pulling survivors from tumbled buildings in post-earthquake scenarios. And possibly terrifying the crap out of enemy soldiers on the battlefield.
Darpa PetMan Military Robot. Also known as Atlas proto. This video covers the life of 'PetMan'. PetMan is being developed by Boston Dynamics for DARPA.
This humanoid robot Walks, crawls, kneels, marches, running, jumping, climbs stairs and moves around obstacles.
Apparently designed for testing chemical suits, but it can perform various tasks dynamically, such as search and rescue operations in fire, nuclear and other hazardous conditions, without human exposure.
In April 2009, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) awarded a $26.3m contract to the Midwest Research Institute (MRI) towards the development of IPE and the PETMAN. (U.S company working for the U.S. defense.)
The bipedal robot weighs about 80kg (180lb) and is nearly six feet tall (1.75m). Petman is the fastest bipedal robot in the world. It uses hydraulic actuation and articulated legs with shock absorbers for operations. The unveiled prototype has an onboard computer, several sensors and other internal monitoring systems. Its functions are currently operated through controls on tether.

The US is rapidly developing killer robot technology
faster than any other nation;
which in my opinion is quite wasteful.
The vast majority of the brainwashed sheeple,
on this planet
will already, willingly slaughter each other,
on command, as it is, without question.
So, I see the development of killer robots as being wasteful.
Furthermore, just imagine all the jobs in the genocide industry
that will be lost,
if we assign the eradication of our very own species, to robots.
So please, let's take a step back,
think twice & be sensible about this.
