Seattle police have network capable of tracking all Wi-Fi devices, discovering past locations and more

The Seattle Police Department purchased a network in February to be used by emergency responders, though it is also capable of tracking devices with Wi-Fi enabled, revealing past location data and more.

Tracking smartphones with Wi-Fi enabled has become somewhat common. One company tracked pedestrians around London via high-tech trashcans and the practice of tracking shoppers via Wi-Fi is now widespread.

That is why I had my house hardwired for internet, the installers thought I was NUTS.  My phone is stupid beyond belief and yet I am content with all this.

That was a smart move Wolf. Now they also have to have a physical search warrant to retrieve anything from your devices.

I have always said you have to be smarter than the average bear.

Low tech...that's the ticket.

I have been hearing rumors that the government is trying to make everybody go to cell phones and do away with land lines altogether. Have you seen anything to indicate this is true?

I found this:

Some phone companies seek to end landline service - USA Today

and

Telephone companies to abandon land lines - Salon.com

Why doesn't this surprise me at all.
