I assume the Brits did not expect him to return. High numbers of "intelligence" workers are either killed off in action or imprisoned elsewhere never to be heard of again. There is though a disturbing problem arising with an ever increasing number of foreign spies and fighters returning to their homelands fully radicalised after their various missions. The higher numbers of mentally unstable recruits that are returning is a big problem for the powers that be in their stupidity for the fear that they Do successfully reintegrate back into a new Polarised World where their views may be commended. Who will the enemy be then on home turf? Another elephant in the room.

Think you're spot on, usually when they 'got em' or they do the double agent thing. They end up getting blown away by drones or the rare occasions driven on a mine, savage ambush by hostile elements, fatal crash the list is long here.
