5 Shot, 2 Dead During New Year’s Eve Celebration In Old Sacramento

Sacramento authorities say two people were killed and three injured in a shooting near where crowds had gathered to watch New Year's Eve fireworks.

Authorities have not said whether a suspect is in custody. Investigators tell KTXL the shooting appears to have stemmed from a fight inside a bar in Old Sacramento, which then spilled onto the street.

A woman claiming to have witnessed the shooting told KTXL she saw a man standing over a person on the ground and firing at least 10 rounds into the victim.

The area's midnight fireworks celebration has been canceled, and the area is on lockdown as police investigate.

Shots Ring Out at Old Sacramento New Year’s Gathering

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The New Year’s Eve celebration in Old Sacramento was violently interrupted by a wild scene on Monday night when five people were shot, including at least two people who died.

The violence erupted in the 1000 block of 2nd Street at the Sports Corner Cafe at about 9:38 p.m., according to the Sacramento Police Department. It wasn’t clear if the shootings happened inside or in front of the establishment.

The extent of the injuries for the others shot wasn’t immediately available and no details were provided on what triggered the shooting. Police didn’t provide any suspect information or confirm any arrests, but several witnesses told CBS13 a man was taken into custody.

“They had one person in an ambulance and one person in a cop car,” one woman said.

“I saw the gun in the hand. He was just screaming and shooting,” another woman said.

Some 40,000 people, including lots of families with young children, had gathered in Old Sac for a 9 p.m. fireworks show shortly before the shots rang out. Another fireworks show scheduled for midnight was canceled. A Sacramento Police helicopter circled overhead to announce the midnight cancellation.

Mounted police, patrol cars and Sacramento Fire trucks converged on the scene as thousands of spectators were blocked off from the crime scene.

Witnesses described hearing several shots and then running for cover.

If he didn't have a gun he would have used something else. There's lots of tools out there for the crazies to use. Take one tool away and they'll just find another.
