ISTANBUL (AFP) - Street protests turned violent against the IMF and World Bank on Tuesday in Istanbul as world finance chiefs huddled to build a solid recovery from the worst economic crisis in decades.
Riot police fired tear gas and water cannons on nearly 2,000 protesters in the Turkish financial capital as they tried to march to a convention centre where the International Monetary Fund and World Bank held annual meetings.Organised by leftist organisations and trade unions, demonstrators carried banners reading "IMF: friend of bosses, enemy of workers" and "Your democracy is a dictatorship, your economy is slavery.
