The Rich Are Getting Richer
Australia's wealthiest are back and fully loaded.

BRW has revealed that after a less than prosperous 2009, Australia's elite have bounced back, adding a whopping $21 billion in wealth to the 2010 BRW Rich 200 list.

This definitive catalogue of the most affluent Aussies now boasts a total fortune of $135.8 billion, up from $114.1 billion in 2009, courtesy of an improved economy and stock market rise.

The Number One Money Man

Westfield shopping centre tycoon, Frank Lowy topped the list with a $5.04 billion fortune. The Australian-Israeli businessman quashed last year's number one entrepreneur Anthony Pratt, for 2010's top spot.

Pratt, who inherited his $4.3 billion fortune and the helm of cardboard packaging and recycling company Visy from his late father Richard Pratt, came in third place with a wealth tallying $4.60 billion, up from $4.30 billion last year.

Meanwhile, Andrew Forrest, of Fortescue Metals Group, came in fourth with $4.24 billion, up from $2.38 billion in 2009. Sydney apartment's billionaire Harry Triguboff, took the fifth spot with $4.20 billion.

The Leading Lady

Mining magnate, Gina Rinehart grabbed the number two spot on the list with a $4.75 billion empire. The leading lady maintains the title of richest woman in Australia courtesy of strong commodity prices and increased production at her privately-owned iron ore mines.

Rinehart, who is the daughter of mining mogul Lang Hancock, helped boost the total wealth of the women on the Rich 200 to $11.6 billion from $9 billion in 2009.

According to BRW, the number of women on the list has jumped to 16 from 13 last year. Queensland rural property giant Susan Marchant is the most notable new female on the list, with $280 million.

New Kid On The Block

The most notable newcomer is Chinese property developer Chau Chak Wing, who boasts a $920 million portfolio. Wing, who also holds Australian citizenship, maintains the title of the highest debutant on the 2010 BRW Rich 200.

Billion Dollar Families

This year brings 57 families to the list, with the wealthiest family title belonging to the Smorgon family of Smorgon Steel fame. The family, who established the steel manufacturing business in the 1980s, took the coveted title with a whopping $2.57 billion fortune.

The total wealth of the families on the list is $34.1 billion, up from $32.6 billion last year.

Malcom In The Middle

Federal parliamentarian Malcolm Turnbull has returned to the Rich 200, recording a wealth of $186 million, up from $178 million in 2009.

BRW also revealed the financial standing of all federal MPs, concluding that the average wealth of Liberal MPs is $4.9 million, and almost three times that of Labor MPs with $1.7 million.

Million Dollar Baby...& Oldie

Electrician-turned-coal magnate, Nathan Tinkler grasped the title of the youngest millionaire. The 34-year-old boasts a fortune valued at $355 million.

David Mandie holds the position for the oldest Aussie on this prestigious rich list. The 91-year-old Melbourne businessman and property investor boasts a wealth of $263 million.
